My brain hurts!

Post by sweller »

Admittedly, I'm as green at this as one can be. I've been reading until I think my eyes are bleeding. But I *think* I have it. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong...

I have an original 15-2133 Kameleon 6. I need to add some new definitions. I've downloaded these files:

IR715.zip
RDFs_for_IR_and_RM_Version_1.28.zip
IRToWav.zip
Samsung_LN32A650.txt
DirecTV_HR2x addresses 1 to 8.zip
Roku.rmdu

And, of course, any and all documents using the term "beginner."

If I understand what I've read correctly, I need to:

1) Use IR to load the RDF for my 15-2133 (Why are there so many?),
2) Load the definitions for the TV, HR21, and Roku
3) Create a new upgrade file
4) Convert the new upgrade file with IRToWav
5) Play the resulting .wav file to breath new life into my old remote.

How'd I do? :)

I know what you mean about the brain hurting. Mine felt like it was being rubbed with electrified steel wool.

You got your files from the wrong area. You need to download from the Main tools

You need IR 8.00

In addition you'll need either RM and its Java support libraries, or KM.

Those files you downloaded the Samsung_LN32A650.txt,
DirecTV_HR2x addresses 1 to 8.zip , and Roku.rmdu are device upgrades. The deviceupgrades need to be formated for your remote. RM (Remote Master) or KM(Keymaster) allow you to convert upgrades.

Since you have at least one RM, you'll need RM. KM can't read RMDU files, but RM can read KM.txt files.

You might want to download IRHELP from the help files too.

You ask whey there are so many RDF's. If you open someone elses RMDU file, it will be formatted for a specific remote. If the RDF isn't on your machine, the upgrade can't be evaluated.

Good Luck

Tip: When creating an upgrade, always include ALL functions from the oem remote, even if you never plan on assigning them to a button. Complete function lists makes an upgrade more helpful to others.

URK! Looks like I'm 0 for naught. Starting over...

Thanks for the detailed response, though.

Hi sweller,
I am new at this myself but it looks like you have some more reading to do to understand how this works.
The IR.exe program you downloaded is old, some of the links are not updated. IR.exe 8.00 is the latest I believe, although there is an 8.01 beta.
You also need either keymap-master v9.18 or RemoteMaster v1.97 to prepare the codes that will be entered into IR.exe.
Note:
Keymap-Master (KM) is a spreadsheet program that must have Microsoft Excel installed on your computer. It won't work with anything else such as Open Office Calc.
Remote Master (RM) needs Java installed on your computer to run.

Both programs do the same thing so you can choose what works best for you.
I won't go into detail but basically what you do is to prepare the codes needed for each piece of equipment (TV-DVD-RCVR-etc) in KM or RM by downloading already prepared files from this site or learning codes from the OEM remote and reading them in IR.
Once you have the code output for each device you load them into IR to prepare the upgrade.
Not sure about making a Wave file for your remote as I haven't done that.
If you don't use a JP1 cable you would use the Wave file to upload the upgrade to your Kameleon.
I hope I have not confused you as I am not always sure of the proper terms used to describe the operations needed to do this.
I found it is best to start out slow and small on the upgrade path. Don't go all out and make a final full upgrade to begin with. Take one piece of equipment and try to make an upgrade for that even if it is only a handful of keys. Make sure you understand what is going on.
Hope this helps.
John

Thanks, John. You've confirmed everything Vicky said.

I gathered up RM and IR 8.00 and all the related files. Now I've hit the next wall:

There's no way to determine which RDF to use without a JP1 cable.

Or is there?

KM displays one 15-2133, RM displays several (exclude the extender ones while selecting). Several, because apparently there are different sizes. Can you tell the size somehow before you get the cable? Battery compartment stickers? User guide?

You could probably pick 1K size, make few upgrades, learn the tools, and then when the cable arrives, IR will detect the size. The worst thing that happens is if the remote is 0.5K, all the upgrades you built in KM/RM won't fit in IR. RM is an integrated application - upgrade files as well as RM+IR - which is why, I'm pretty sure, RM has to be sensitive to the very specific remote sizes.

But the remote size is not relevant while working on the upgrade files, mostly making button assignments in RM or KM.

Hi, Liz. And, thanks!

I've actually gotten as far as being able to generate a .wav (Mrs. and dog hate the racket!) and am stepping through the EEPROM sizes one by one.

So now what I'm thinking is that I'm not putting the Kameleon in the upgrade mode correctly.

Any pointers?

UPDATE!: I must have successfully put it into the upgrade mode because I've succeeded in de-programming it.

What kind of upgrade are you creating?

If you've deprogrammed your remote, it sounds like you were doing an "Entire Image". That is not recommended because you are not starting from a downloaded image. Typically you'll just do an UPGRADE type of wav file, because you don't have a cable to know all the flag settings and such.

If I were trying to create new devices, I'd have you load the upgrade wav and then assign the devices to the buttons manually/

You might need to do a basic reset(980) or a Manufacturers reset (981) to recover.

My original intent was to only add control for three new devices. In the local vernacular, that's a "device upgrade"?

Anyway, you nailed it. My first and only clue was how long the screeching continued before the dog tried to eat my face. It looks as though IR defaults to "Entire Image". True? Gotta watch that...

It appears that all is not lost. I'll give Reset (980) a try. Though at this point I'm thinking Reset (981) might be the more prudent tact to take. No?

Thanks for your kind patience and understanding. But you been through this before, haven't you?

A 981 restores the remote to the way it left the factory. A 980 is a less radical reset. In the case of a OneForAll Universal Remote a 981 is pretty safe, however if you were using a OEM remote that came with a piece of video equipment, or a remote provided from a cable system, this would be very radical.

Thanks for your kind patience and understanding. But you been through this before, haven't you?
I've been through this TWICE! The second time, after a 3 year absence, so much had changed that I had to start over from scratch. I was often reduced to tears of frustration. So yeah I totally understand how difficult it can be to take in this much information. I also think it was worth the effort!!!!

15-2133: Starting over.

Post by sweller »

Vicky,

As is my luck, I was merrily performing a Reset 981 before I read your reply. No harm, no foul. The remote is preprogrammed with the codes for both my DVD player and my amp, so I'm back to where I was. (WHEW!)

I'm starting to feel comfortable with the whole IR/RM scenario. The device code for my TV was in .txt form, so I opened it with RM (from within IR), and copy/pasted it into the device tab in IR. Then saved it as a .wav file.

Is there a trick to upgrading through the PC speakers?

It really can't be all that critical, or URC, RS, OFA would've gone nuts long before .wav files became as prevalent as they are.

(BTW - Us really old guys call it acoustic coupling. ;-)

I've read that rubber banding the remote to the speakers can be helpful in the wav upgrading. I've created WAV's for OP but have never loaded one myself, as I have the cables.

Ah. The high-tech approach.

I probably have enough parts scattered about to make several JP1 cables. But as you probably know, the 15-2133 (Is that what you have?) is a bit of a kluge where the batteries/cover/JP1 pins are concerned. I haven't given up yet (I've come so far!), but I getting to where I should just make the darned cable.

UPDATE: I give up. I've tried everything I can think of to upgrade with the .wav files. It's probably something simple. And likely to be staring me right in the face. I opened up the remote to see about a cable header. It's one of the early ones and things are real tight in there. I can't see that happening without a semi-destructive mod to the case, which I could do, but this has turned into much more of a project than I expected it would be. I'm still open to input, though. Any more thoughts out there?
