JP1 Remote as Keypad?

Frustrated w/ the relatively expensive programming hardware/software packages for Niles and Xantech keypads, I'm contemplating making my own using a JP1 remote as the guts for a homemade keypad. My question is - Can I either disconnect the IR LED entirely or connect in parallel w/ the LED on the remote, and use these new leads to drive a repeater system?
