Using device files to manually add key codes

Post by ceekay »

I am using a Pioneer receiver model VSX-D514. The only OFA code that seems to do anything is 1023, but when I do that, it doesn't have all of my inputs mapped to buttons as it should.

Just by looking at the device files I could see the four digit device codes that you normally put into the universal remote and it "works". The code I am using now is 1023, so I looked for a VSX-Dxxx model that seemed to use code 1023. The OFA people said I need 1123, but my remote does not have this.

However, when I use the three-digit numbers for the various input functions, they don't seem to do anything... are these the EFC codes I need or are they OBC's that I need to convert? Thanks!

The only pioneer setup code that accepts EFC's through the remote is AMP code 0013. What remote do you have?

It's an OFA 6131... I think I have tried that code and it didn't work... I forget, but either way, are the three-digit numbers in the device files EFC numbers? Thanks!

If you're not jp1 user, then you need to have AMP code 0013 added by mailing it in. EFC's are 3-digit on most remotes, the newer 9960 and RS 15-2142 only take 5-digit EFC's.

Many Pioneer setup codes don't work with 3 digit EFC numbers (and the urc-6131 only supports 3 digit EFC numbers).

Audio/1023 does not work with 3 digit EFC numbers.
Amp/0013 is not present in the urc-6131.
Audio/0014 and CD/0032 are closely related to Audio/1023 and each is in the urc-6131 and each supports 3 digit EFC numbers and with 3 digit EFC numbers each can produce some of the signals that Audio/1023 could have produced with 5 digit EFC numbers. BUT I don't know if any of those signals are useful in a VSX-D514. More likely the signals you want are in Amp/0013 and you can't get them without an upgrade.

If you send the remote in for upgrade, you can get more than one setup code added. Make sure that will include the one UEI thinks is right for your Pioneer model (which you seem to have said is 1123) and make sure it also includes Amp/0013.

But if you get a JP1 cable, then all that matters in upgrading the remote is that they will add an eeprom, so that with JP1 you can then customize a Pioneer setup code to do exactly what you want it to.

If you're planning more serious use of JP1, then a 2K byte eeprom you could buy and solder on yourself would be better than the 1K eeprom you would get by sending it in for upgrade. But sending it for upgrade is cheaper and easier and for simple JP1 use 1K vs. 2K won't matter.

ceekay,

I know it's a hassle, but send it in. I sent in my 6131 because I bought a Pioneer VSX-1014 and found the remote next to useless.

Once I got upgraded -- and installed an upgrade from the file section of this forum using a JP1 cable -- the 6131 was awesome. It does everything the original complicated Pio remote did.

Good luck.
