Not sure if these questions belong here or in the beginner section, but here goes (moderator, feel free to move this if you think it belongs elsewhere):

1. When you use devices4 and specify TV setup code 0 (for a Sony TV), it tells you that the protocol is Sony, protocol ID is 00 CA, fixed data is 80 25 40 and there are two subdevices (1 and 64). But if you open up the latest Keymaster spreadsheet and specify Sony as the protocol, it tells you that the protocol ID is 00 CA but the fixed data is 00 00 00 and there are no subdevices. Why the difference? (Both seem to work ok as far as I can tell.) And what exactly is the fixed data telling IR.exe and the remote anyway?

2. In keymaster, if you specify a 2116 remote, there are many possible device types you can specify. If you then open up IR.exe and specify a 2116 remote, there are somewhat fewer device types and the categories are somewhat different (e.g. there is a PVR category in KM but no counterpart in IR.exe). I know that something maps the categories over (e.g. when you paste a PVR device from KM to IR.exe that device shows up in IR.exe as VCR), but is there any list of mappings so you can tell ahead of time in planning your upgrade which device will get mapped to which (you would want to do this so you can tell ahead of time which buttons will be available for the upgrade; I know you can back into that by simply looking at which buttons have an '@' in front of them in the buttons section of KM, but what I'm sondering about is a more direct way to find which KM 'device types' will in effect become 'CBL', which will become 'VCR', etc.)?

3. More generally, why does KM give you device types that need to be mapped (rather than simply sticking to the device types that in fact IR.exe will use)?

Devices4 is telling you about setup codes built in on the 15-1994.
KM is helping YOU build setup codes. In KM you specify the device numbers you want and it computes the fixed data from that.

In most models of remote, several different device types share the same device type number. Which types share numbers differs among models. IR is only concerned with the types for the current remote, so for each device type number it shows only one name.

3. More generally, why does KM give you device types that need to be mapped (rather than simply sticking to the device types that in fact IR.exe will use)?

KM works with one model of remote at a time, but it assumes that you may later change the remote model type, so KM remembers device type differences even if they don't make a difference for the current model.

You can look in the RDF file for the remote in question, in the [DeviceTypeAliases] section.
On the left side of the = is the remote device type, and on the right side are the ones that map to it.

In KM, if you look at the Layout tab, you'll see one of the columns highlighted. This shows which of the available device types for the remote you've chosen will be used in IR.
