Radioshack 15-2117 & JP1
I have the RS 15-2117. I'm getting a JP1 cable, but i was curious how the codes entered through software use the memory of the remote? It seems like this remote has very limited memory, since i ran out of memory using a few devices. if i enter a bunch of devices through the JP1 cable, will that use the same memory as I used w/ IR learning, which ran out quickly?
You should have plenty of memory for upgrades with a jp1 cable. Learning is a separate block of memory and uses up a lot more memory. The simplest way I can describe it is compare recording a wav file (aka learning a signal) to a text file containing a musical score(aka creating a device upgrade). The text files with the musical score explaining how to play the music is going to be much smaller than a recording of the music. The same is true of upgrades created with our tools and uploaded via a cable compared to learning the signal.
For jp1 remotes the do have a fairly small amount of learning memory that usually fills up in maybe 2 dozen learns at most. You can easily fit several times that with device upgrades in the remote.
