A Reccommendation for Upgrade Searching

I am not sure if this has been mentioned before, or if there is some limitation that would preclude this, but wouldn't be much easier finding upgrades if we knew what standard device code the upgrade was originally based off of and had a way to search by it, such as making it a requirement that the code be stated in the filename or something. Many times, we can't find our model of device and have to use another similar model device upgrade as a starting point, but if we don't know what models use the base code, then its very difficult to find one to start.

for example, I have a Sony receiver that partially works with Sony Aud/1758 - There are no upgrades availlable for the series of receiver I have, so I am wondering how I can find another Sony receiver that uses 1758. The only way I can think of is downloading every Sony receiver upgrade, and loading them into KM or Remotemaster and seeing what codes were used.

Maybe there's something I am not thinking of, so sorry if there is , just trying to figure out how to make it all a bit more user friendly.

I'm sure there are many upgrades not based on any standard setup code. I myself have created upgrades simply by learning and decoding the signals without ever looking for a standard code (this is especially true when dealing with a new device for which there is no standard code).

The other problem, and probably more important, is getting people to include those types of details in the filename, not to mention filename length restrictions. An obvious compromise would be to ask users to state such things in the file description when uploading. However, there's no real way to police it.

Back when we were on Yahoo, I actually tried to create a database of upgrades where these types of details were indexed. It was daunting to say the least and I gave up rather quickly.

At the end of the day, with the relativley small upgrade filesize, downloading several isn't that much of a hassle. Plus, one might just learn a few things just by looking at various files by others..

Nice idea, but...

1) It's hard enough to get users to share their upgrade files as things are now. I think creating more rules for posting upgrades would put off even more users.

2) A large portion of the upgrade files in the files area are not based on any "standard" device code.

3) Many "standard" device codes are created by UEI after JP1 users have already posted upgrade files (Aud/1758 being a case in point).

4) Even if a user's upgrade was based on a "standard" device code it still would not help you to identify which upgrade works best with your device, since the UEI device codes seldom include out-of-the-ordinary functions.

In general, that is the best approach. (Sorry! )

However, Sony is quite consistent from model to model, so it may not be as hard as you think. Try this upgrade for example. Its already set for AV2. Then check out this sticky post for more info on Sony button functions. If you find another upgrade that seems closer than mine, but is set for AV1, I already explained how you can change it to AV2 in your other thread.

Thanks - that one, 1359, worked for me so now I have the Descretes. Ill post the file for others
