Just saved myself some money on a new remote

I was going to get a new remote, either a kameleon or a 9910, or maybe a non-jp1 remote like the MX500. My 15-1994 was dying and it was getting hard to even change channels.

I was looking around this website and saw the instructions for opening the remote, so I did. I cleaned all the contacts, pulled out a loose transformer that I think controlled the backlight, and put it back together and it works like new, except the backlight. The light hasn't worked in a few years anyway so I don't miss it. The biggest problem now is the battery cover latch broke off so it is held on with a rubber band.

I wonder if the JP1 connector will work better now? It was always difficult to download and I had to try sometimes 10 times before it would work. I'll have to give it a try, even though I have no programming need.

Now that I say this, I wonder if the transformer is part of the JP1 interface? I guess I'll find out.

The transformer has nothing to do with the JP1 interface, it's just there for the backlight. If you want to try your hand at replacing it, he only place you can get this part in the States is hovisdirect.com, the part is called "PX13193-H Transformer" and it's $5. (Hovis gets them from the same Hong Kong supplier that UEI gets them from).

If you have a problem making a good JP1 connection, and your sure the problem isn't in your JP1 cable, I would recommend re-heating the solder on the 6-pin. If it settles back into a "Hershey's Kisses" shape, it should be good, if it forms into a ball, you should remote it and apply new solder.

I can do without the backlight. The JP1 cable I built from your kit, and was probably the first electronics kit I'd ever done, as simple as it is. Maybe I'll open up the D shell and take a look and also look at the 6 Pin.
