Has anybody ever added a second IR LED to something like an 8910 or 8811 (6V remote?) My cable box (Motorola DCT-6412) is in my IR cabinet, which is to the left of the TV by quite a bit. Even though the cabinet is angled, it's still very picky about the remote. I was thinking of adding a second LED to my 8910, mounted so that it aims to the left. I've already pushed out the regular LED as much as I can, and even tried to angle it a bit.
The rest of my devices work fine. The DVD and Receiver are Sony, as is the TV, and are connected using S-Link. Simply pointing at the TV passes on the remote signal to them even if they don't pick it up themselves.

Have you tried simply pushing the IR-LED further out of the casing? I do this an standard proccedure when I do 6131 remotes.
