I've been doing JP1 for a while now. I enjoy the configurability at the low price point, as I'm sure everybody does. But, I have yet to be completely happy with th emodels I have used over the years 1994, 2116/2117, 8910/9910, and 6131. The 8820 seems like it has all the functions I need in a nice layout and design. I do think it's a poor design decision to forego the backlighting that was in the older models, though. I guess I can't have everything. |

Might I recommend an Atlas? I like the form factor, the button layout, and the number and names of the button set. (PVR buttons, color buttons, extra +/- buttons for day and page, etc.) _________________ Beginners - Read this thread first

You certainly may. Can you elaborate a little more? Model number? etc. |

You can tell quite a bit by looking at the guide to identifying remotes.

Some atlas remotes do come with back lighting. They are not the most attractive remotes, but the key layout is really user friendly. |

Ah. These are OEM remotes for cable companies. I've seen that thread. But, totally ignored these remotes, as it seemed they are manufactured for cable companies. Even if they are available for purchase by the general public, they are only 5-device units. Plus, they are butt-ugly. |

(1) Readily available on eBay;
(2) The 5-device limit can be stacked using the Device Multiplexing in the extender up to 10 still keeping a relatively straightforward to remember process, and even more with a little bit more ingenuity (and the extenders are coming along nicely - certain versions of the Atlas already have working extenders, and the others are works-in-progress);
(3) I agree that they are not sexy in appearance, but once it's in your hand while you're watching your HT, are you REALLY looking at the remote? (and if so, WHY!?! ) _________________ Beginners - Read this thread first

It sits on my coffee table. So, it needs to not be ugly.
I also don't feel like dealing with extenders and hidden device keys, etc.
I want a remote with more than enough existing device keys, plenty of easy-to-understand, pre-labeled function keys, and a decent appearance. It seems that for less than $20, the 8820 fits the bill. The only thing missing is the backlight.
Obviously, there are a number of high-end remotes that can fit that bill. But, they are $100-$200 or more. I have a philosophical problem with paying that much for a remote. |

Don't worry. The 8820 fits the bill as good as many others. It also seems to survive dropping better than, say, the 8910 and other heavy remotes. At less than $20 maybe you can investigate putting some little lights into it or, perhaps, some electroluminescent string. |

Nah. If I'm gonna invest that much time, or even more money, then I'd get a Harmony, HTM, Universal, or one of the other high-end remotes.
I really don't wanna spend too much time on it. After all, it's only a remote. |

No he owns 3 JP1 remotes! He's got super human immunity! I on the other hand just recieved a box of 14 more Atlas remotes! Now to go home and plug them in and see what their signatures are! Definately an addictive sickness. |

I thought I was my 10 atlas remotes laying around was bad.
I still haven't decided what I'm keeping but at this point probably one of the Backlight OCAPS and 1 or 2 of the 1025's |

I just use them as intended, as universal remote controls. I just enjoy the configurability of JP1. But, other than their intended use, I derive no additional joy or pleasure from them, any more than I would a toaster. |

I think the atlases look pretty cool.
I might be interested in buying one from you "hoarders", if it was back-lite and was one of the ones that had an extender. Any recommendations of which might fit that bill (keeping the variations straight has been tough ).
[ edit : I guess it would be a 1056BC in the black (non-silver) variation ?) ]
Best,
