With my Explorer 8300HDC cable box I got a UR5U 8800L- TWY remote. It has a 4 pin connector under the battery cover. Is that a JP1-like connector? Can it be used for programming? If so, where do I get a cable/connector to interface it to my Thinkpad 43p?
Out of the box, it controls some of the functions of my SONY LCD TV, power and volume for my HT system, but ignores my Panasonic DVR.
Thanks |

Most likely not.
A 4 pin connector and a UR model number probably indicate a remote made by http://www.universalremote.com/ and not one that is jp1 compatible. |

Thanks.
Does anyone know whether this remote (Atlas?) is programmable at all? The 4 pin connector must be there for a reason...
With the new LCD TV I now have two additional remotes-- one for the TV, and one for the new Explorer 8300 HD cable box. In addition, I have the Yamaha home theater remote and the Panasonic DVR...
I'd like to combine them all into one. |

I'd assume the MFG can do something with the 4 pin connector in the remote and that might include adding upgrades to the remote. Unfortunately each remote MFG does this in their own unique way and uses different hardware so we can't really offer you much assistance with that remote. Your remote doesn't even appear to look like an Atlas remote.
If you did get an actual JP1 remote and a cable we could definitely help you get it controlling your devices. If you are interested in an Atlas remote I happen to have several for sale and could pre-load upgrades for your devices if we already have some made and you might not need a cable.

We often get questions like this when people see a connector of some description in their remotes, but suffice to say...
When UEI make remotes, they do one of two things, they either ...
a) Include a regular JP1 connector (or pads or whatever), or ...
b) Nothing.
UEI doesn't use 4-pin connectors or any other sort of connector (although, their very old remotes had a 3-hole connector). _________________ Rob

Thanks. I am waiting for an 8820 remote that might be able to do what I want without jp1-like programming. If not, I shall return for the cable, etc. I already have a RS-15-2116 with a jp1 parallel cable, but that cable does not work on modern (low voltage) laptops or PCs, so I may have to go with a USB cable.
My system includes a Yamaha HT5560 receiver, a SONY 46XBR4 TV, a Panasonic E85 DVR and a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD cable box. |

I'd like to combine them all into one. | This statement is a bit puzzling to me. The model name "Atlas" for remote controls is used by UEIC in a line of OEM remotes they provide for VARIOUS cable providers, including some they provide to Scientific Atlanta, making it seem extremely unlikely that SA would have ANOTHER manufacturer making remotes that happen to be called "Atlas".
The Atlas remotes we know about HERE on this site are most certainly programmable with JP1 tools. The oldest model (URC-1054) uses the JP1 interface, whilst the newer ones (URC-1055 and 1056) use the JP1.2/1.3 interface. All are supported by the tools.
Can you post some pictures of the remote and connector or links to an OEM site with pics of this remote and its interface? _________________ Beginners - Read this thread first

The picture Evan posted is just like my remote. It might not be Atlas-- I got it from Time Warner to control their SA Explorer 8300 HD cable box.
I realize that the 8820 is a jp1.2 remote, and if I cannot con it to control all my devices without programming, I shall be looking for a jp1.2 USB cable. |

Do computers still have old-fashion serial ports? After all, the S in USB is Serial. Anyway, when I need a cable, I'll be looking for advice, too, probably... |

venik wrote: | Do computers still have old-fashion serial ports? | Keep in mind that the JP1 interfaces are designed to be easy to build and affordable, thus requiring simple hardware designs. Also, backward compatibility with legacy PC's is a plus. Since the JP1.x serial design works with USB-to-serial converters, even newer PC's can use them.
Quote: | After all, the S in USB is Serial. | True, but it's not even closely related to the old RS-232 serial interface. The only thing in common between the 2 is the 1-bit-at-a-time data flow (hence "serial"). _________________ Mark |

(1) Get a JP1.x or 1.2 cable. (It will be a serial cable);
(2) If you have no serial port:
(a) for a PC (not practical for laptop), get a cheap add-in card for your PC that gives you a serial port; or
(b) for either PC or Laptop, get a USB-serial adapter cable. _________________ Beginners - Read this thread first

Thanks. I'll be back when (if?) I give up on using the 8820 as my one-and-only remote. |
