I remember what is was now, it wasn't keymoves, it was if you changed
the device type (like from CBL to VCR) then that broke VPT for that
device. A post from Rob reminded me. |

That makes sense. I had suspected something like that since I had done a device type swap. I was able to get the VPT working by assigning a TAPE device in KM to think it was a Tuner. That in turn was assigned to the Audio device key. That allowed me to get VPT to work on the tape device.
A negative side effect was that some of the key appearances were not appropriate for the tape device. That's one of the reasons I kept chasing a working extender, figuring I could fix all of that.
But as Rosanne Roseanna Danna would say "never mind".
