I have had the subject remote for some time and I now find that the
keys used most often are becoming intermittently non-functional. Also,
they feel kind of sticky or spongy.
I have a serious amount of time invested in getting this unit to do
what I needed. This included two returns to the factory to add stuff.
Unfortunately, at this time I doubt that I have complete records to
transfer the programming to a new unit.
I checked with the factory and they indicated that they could not fix
the key problem.
A couple of years ago, I remember reading about someone who used
a repair kit for automobile rear window defogger trace to fix the keys.
However, I have no idea how to go about it nor do I know if it
actually worked and for how long.
Does anyone know anything about this or any other procedure that
would work? If so where could I find the detailed instructions?

First off, you should get yourself a JP1 cable so you can take a back-up of your programming, which you could easily transfer over to a replacement URC-9800 if you were to get one.
As for the sticky question, you should take the remote apart and clean it, you'll be surprised at how much gunk you will find inside it.
As for the worn out buttons, the word I hear on the Loctite rear window kit is that the stuff flakes off after a while, so the recommended solution is to use this stuff:

Hi Rob,
Thanks for the info.
I had understood that using the JP1 cable would backup the factory
stored instructions but not those either keyed in by me or learned
instructions. Is this not right? I need them all.
Where can I get a JP1 cable and instructions?
I have ordered the rubber key stuff that you suggested. Thanks
for the tip.

Totally wrong. The "factory stored instructions" are burned into the ROM chip and are not changeable, so there's no need to back them up. A JP1 cable just gives you access to the temporary data that gets stored in the EEPROM chip. This data includes any programming that you may have done and it also includes any upgrades that may have been loaded into the remote by UEI (if you have ever sent it in for an upgrade). The key factor here is that you can use the JP1 cable to load your own upgrades too.
Normally the JP1 cable would also let you see the learned signals, but the URC-9800 is a special case because it has a totally seperate ROM chip and EEPROM chip just for learning. If you want the ability to read this second EEPROM chip, you would need to do a small hardware mod to the remote. I have written up a description of the mod in the Hardware folder.

Rob, I must be thick but no matter how hard I have looked, I can not
find a hardware folder nor this file. Can you point me to it. Thanks.
Also, I do not think that I used the quote function here corrctly. How
does it work? |
