Hi there to everyone! By chance I found this forum via Google search, and as I am trying as well to find a '80s VHS camcorder expert. I have an identification issue related to a camera from the '80s. Most likely could be a VHS one but can be as well as VHS-C. Can anyone tell me or recognise which type/brand camera filmed this images judging after the way it displays clock/date on the right side below of the screen? Here is a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awWJn3QmDuM I will appreciate any info on the camera which filmed these images. I can be contacted at alexjoy4ever@yahoo.com for any detail. This is an historichal project, and the images are from a modern revolution back in 1989 in Eastern Europe during the communism fall. Thanks in advance to however can help me. Alex |

Nothing definitive but it is not a Video 8 (note head switching at the bottom and dihedral/back tension at the top - neither of which exist for 8mm) or BetaMovie which had no playback function and no "on screen display".
Your problem is complicated, however, since the recording appears to be at least second generation and the time and date could have been generated by the video player, not the camcorder. Note the logo in the top right corner and the time count not matching up well with fast forwarding and rewinding. _________________ Just call me Zaphod (or Steve) --- I never should have started using numbers in a screen name but I just can't stop now. |

No doubt the OP knows this but for the benefit of others, the date and time stamp correspond to rebel occupation of the (state-owned) TVR broadcasting building in Bucharest, Romania in December 1989 but whether the footage was taken that day or whether the date and time were added later I can’t tell for sure. They've kept the TVR logo top right but whether this was because it was hard-wired into the broadcast apparatus or because the broadcasters felt that it lent an official air to the footage is anyone’s guess unless someone from that time is reading this thread. I will say this, though, the clock seen in the footage matches the time stamp so the time is likely accurate and recorded history suggests that the date is accurate too. My overall impression is that this is actual, contemporaneous footage but that someone has edited it and added the date and time stamps to make it "clearer" so you can't necessarily tell the camcorder used from the footage. |
