More keys for the 8820

My OFA 8820 needs more keys!
Can the SET key be used as a shift?
I am trying to avoid the need to program the 8820 with a JP1.X cable, since I have almost all the functionality I need without it.

Yes.
Why did you need to ask? Why not just try it, since you seem to already understand the concept?

And if you need even more keys, the extender provides x-shift capability, so you can stack your functions 3-deep.
Whoops. Didn't read carefully. Didn't see you didn't want to use the cable and software. You need a cable to use an extender.

Are you trying to avoid PROGRAMMING with a cable, or are you trying to avoid OBTAINING (buying or building) a cable?
If the former (i.e you have a cable but don't want to bother using the computer to program the remote) I suggest that it's MUCH easier to program all of your keymoves and macros - particularly to shifted keys - using the cable. The cable isn't JUST for upgrades or extenders.
If the latter, then OK, you can manually program keymoves and macros directly to most keys or all of the shifted keys. Just remember that a keymove programmed to a shifted numeric key requires TWO presses of "set" to access the shifted function in the unextended remote as opposed to a single press for other shifted buttons.

Thanks you all for the quick responses.
I do not have a cable for the 8820, and don't want to get one if I can get along without it. I have one for my (wonderful) 15-2116, but it stopped working when I bought a new Thinkpad laptop. I got the 8820 as a replacement, which I had hoped will have a larger learning memory. So far I have managed to do all I wanted (control the SONY LCD tv, the SA Explorer cable box/DVR, and the Yamaha Home Theater system, including its DVD player) without any JP1 programming. When I used the 15-2116 with IR I loved it, but I believe in a doing things on a need to do basis, and so far the 8820 had sufficient number of keys, etc.
BTW-- I managed to program the missing keys (page up/down) by using the VCR device mode, since I have no VCR anymore.
