Another device that uses NEC1 protocol, device 32

So I have a new satellite receiver that I want my TiVo to control. Last time, I manually added the IR codes for the receiver into the TiVo database and I am going thru the same procedure again when a thought occured.

"This new receiver uses the NEC1 protocol, device 32. Is it possible that there is another receiver that the TiVo already has in its database using the same NEC1 protocol, device 32 code set?"

So, without having to download a lot of device upgrade files and looking to see if it uses the same, is there some sort of cross-reference database out there that would list other devices that use the same code set?

At the end of the day, by the time you've done all of this (with no guarantee of success) it'll probably be easier to do what you did last time, because you know how to do it, and you know it works.

However, to partially answer your questions:

There are lots of setup codes that use NEC1 device 32.

Download this spreadsheet and you'll see there are at least a couple of dozen:

Tip: In Excel, use Data - Filter - Autofilter from the menu to give you pull down combo boxes at the top of each column for filtering the results to find what you want ...

Devices.xls

However, just because they use the same protocol and device number, that doesn't mean the "command set" (ie the EFCs used) for particular functions will be the same.

You'd also need this spreadsheet to cross reference the setup codes back to manufacturer/brand: (that's not what it's intended for, but it contains that information)

Devices4.xls

Or you could download some UEI manuals to match setup codes to brands.

Unless someone knows of some better reference tool that would suit this task.

In the upgrade file, it says "Devices:,NEC1,32,255,,,,,,,,," so using the first xls file, I filtered to Protocol as NEC1, Dev1 as 32 and Dev2 as 255 returning just a single entry. Cable Group, Sat Mode, Setup code 1232.

The 2nd xls file didn't have this entry so now I need to read some manuals to find the same setup code for another receiver?

A quick forum search for "1232" indicates that a receiver using this code is:

viewsat extreme 2000

Unfortunately that search also indicates that the SAT/1232 code is not built in to any remotes, so searching manuals is probably not a good idea, I shouldn't have suggested it really.

Looking at devices.xls, SAT/1232 seems to exist in there because it is in a Slingbox RV - I know almost nothing about Slingboxes, so that doesn't help me to help you.

There's no entry for SAT/1232 on this page, either
http://www.hifi-remote.com/ofa/devices-cbl.shtml

So I'm struggling to know what else to suggest.

A quick look through the Tivo forums for information on whether the Tivo will control viewsat receivers (based on the info above) returns 6 or 7 hits indicating that there is no built in support for these receivers because they are not used by anyone supplying programming/listings compatible with Tivo.

Try this thread (featuring classicsat - who is a regular here)

It's starting to look like you might end up adding this yourself again

I have a Viewsat VS2000 Ultra receiver and the upgrade file I was using is the Viewsat VS2000.

Based on the information you have found and posted above, it seems that it is very unlikely that I will find another device that uses this code set and that it will also already be in the TiVo database. I guess I will have to just finish my original task of entering the code set into the TiVo manually.

I greatly appreciate your help.

Thanks, but I didn't help much in the end.

It's still possible there is a compatible model in the Tivo database, but there are no more resources I personally know of to help you find it, if it exists.

For example - it's possible that the subdevice (255) doesn't need to match for the signals to still work - that would open up the possibilities for searching for Manufacturers/Brands.

But, and it's a BIG BUT: that could be a massive blind alley, and you could waste an enormous amount of time without finding anything - remember, even if you find a device using a compatible protocol, the codes for 0-9 and enter (keys used by Tivo) would also have to be the same for it to work.

Someone may reply to this thread with better answers for you than I've been able to.

Following the same procedure as before but it isn't working this time. Perhaps someone can tell me if I'm doing anything wrong.

I edit the nec1.irp file changing the Device line to "Device=32.255" then run MakeHex to output the pronto hex codes. Do I need to change any other information in the irp file?

I have the upgrade in my 6131 now and it is working great but the TiVo isn't sending the proper IR info. :(

Smudge - if you don't get an answer to your last question in this thread, consider starting a new thread, because this is a reasonably long conversation that people may not read to the end of.

I can't help you with MakeHex or pronto - that really is johnsfine specialist area - I notice he helped you with that last time.

Ok. I found the problem. When I was looking up the code for each button, I was looking in the EFC column instead of the OBC column. I now have my TiVo controlling the Viewsat properly.

Again, thanks for all your help. You guys are the best.
