JP1 Remotes

Maybe this is a stupid question, but what is a good local source for JP1 capable remotes? I've checked my local Walmart and Radio Shack, and it doesn't seem that any of the JP1 remotes are sold anymore. Is there any local stores that carry a JP1 remote that doesn't require hardware mods?

You're probably limited to online options now. RS has discontinued most of their good remotes (for reasons that only they will understand). Though you can still get the 15-2133 and 15-2138 in many RS stores (these are the Kameleons which will require a pogo-pin adapter).

Most of the new OFA models use a new processor that isn't JP1 compatible yet.

I just happen to have some pre-modded units of the original URC-6131 available if you're interested, and I should be getting a few other OFA models in soon.

Best Buy still carries the URC-8910, which is JP1-capable out of the box (about $40). The 8910 can also be updated through the 'WAV' method without a JP1 cable.

WalMart carries the 6131nw, can can do JP1, but requires a connector and EEPROM to be added.

Fry's also carries several models. The 8810 and 8910 would be JP1 out of the box.

I think with more people going cable, they are using the cable company remotes these days for general use, since most can control 3 devices or so (cable, TV, amp or DVD).

Thanks for the advice. I've had a RS 15-2116 for our main media area for several years, but now I'm looking to make all the other rooms consistant (vol and channel on the same sides, etc).

I've seen the 6131nw at Walmart for $12.95 or so, and I don't mind cracking open the case and soldering, but I was checking to see if there was an easier, faster solution.

If JP1 is dying, what is the programmable format that is taking over?

As Robman said, UEIC is switching to JP1.2. Nothing new is replacing it on the hobbyist programmable fron, AFAIK, until someone cracks JP1.2.
