JP1 Remotes

Hi all,

I have the Original RCA remote and RS 15-2117 for this RCA 5-cd changer, model number RP8065. I searched on this and the Yahoo group for info, but found only one thread with any info close to being useful, at this link: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jp1/message/20014

- Using the 15-2117's factory CD code #0053 gives partial functionality (REW, PLAY/PAUSE, FF, and STOP), but that's it... needed a few more buttons. The only buttons on the remote that matter are:
POWER, Mute, << Track Search, Play/Pause, Track Search >>, Stop, Repeat, Disc Skip, and Shuffle. The track search buttons are used as rewind and fast forward as well as track skipping.

Is there any easy way to clean this up into an upgrade file for this model CD Player? Am I missing something else?

Despite the bad learn of the Shuffle key, all the buttons that you learned clearly state that the protocol is RCA with a device code of 8, which is all you need to start an upgrade. In fact, this is the same info as used by CD/0053, so you could also simply program those buttons as key moves if you like (though creating an upgrade is better)

The power command apparently uses device 12 not 8. I actually decoded it manually to make sure that was correct. The very last segment is not meaningful but the one time and repeat are both device 12 which is the RCA receiver device code. Is this a mini system?

Nope, it's a stand alone 5-disc changer... I thought the Power button being a different code was a little odd too. It's a little mixed up. Any thoughts?

Is there any chance that the Power command is simply a bad learn?

I assume Jon would recognise "simply a bad learn". I haven't picked that sample apart by hand myself. Any change the orriginal remote sends some kind of macro rather than a single signal for the Power button? The 2117 might not have learned enough for (even) Jon to tell that the original was a macro.

It shouldn't be too hard to duplicate that single command in device 12 for test purposes. How does that one command affect the disc changer? Does it do what the orriginal power key does?

Well, for what it's worth, the "learned" power button does indeed work. I don't think it's a macro - I don't think the original remote's that smart, but I'm a newbie at this JP1 stuff. I've learned it a couple of times and still comes up device 12. Any thoughts?

You might try this experiment. Assign EFC 227 and 219 from CD_0053 to a couple of buttons and see what they do (normally they are discrete On and Off).

Otherwise you can try the Power button on Audio_1254 and see if that works (it may be the discrete Off =C0 3B) or you can key move C0 2A (what the decodes say your power command is) and you can also try C0 3A the discrete ON. All these must be done in hex with the space between the bytes since it is a two byte protocol.

Well, I added a key move on the CD/0053 which used Audio/1254 command C0 2A for the power key, and it works AOK for both Off/On.

Now, just getting started on this stuff, how would I know where to find the other 3 keys to move/add? How do you determine from the device codes, OBC/EFC codes, which remote device code #### is the correct "device"?

Once we figure the rest out, is there also a howto somewhere that describes how to make an upgrade file? (For those who come along later, and have the same model player?)

Probably the easiest is to use Audio_1254 since it can do all devices and all commands. It takes one extra byte but for a few commands -- no big deal. The two bytes, C0 2A are device and OBC respectively. The RCA device is expressed in 4-bits and is the top nibble of the first byte C (the second nibble can be anything so just stay with 0) and 2A is the OBC in hex.

If you need to convert decimal to hex easily, use the MS Calculator, View|Scientific.

Ok... Definitely making headway here, but I've been digging for, and can't seem to find, the default code listing (OBC/EFC/button assignments, etc.) for the Audio 1254 device? It's not in the devices4 file that I found. I know this 1254 device is a factory loaded device in my 15-2117, but is it available somewhere as a loadable device file, just as a point of reference? Maybe I'm missing something but I can't think of a way to find or otherwise "see" the codes that make this factory programmed device work, so that I can modify it to suit my CD player? Just a little confused...

Devices4 is based on all the setup codes in the 1994 remote. The 2117 came along a good number of years later, after more cd and dvd players hit the market. If you want the "official" EFC/functions list for audio_1254 you can call the RS "hotline" and ask RS to email them to you. Please send a copy to Rob and he'll post it with all the other setup codes he has posted.

I think I may have gotten you off the track. There is no listing available for that kind of information, but those are commands for an RCA receiver NOT a CD. I seriously doubt that any of those built in commands will do anything for the CD. The protocol used in that AUDIO_1254 CAN be used to create ANY RCA device and command but it MUST be done as a key move in hex as explained above. EFC's have no useful meaning in two byte commands.

The reason AUDIO_0254 does that is because RCA uses the discrete ON commands for DVD's, CD's, VCR's TV's and DSS STB's as the discrete AV input commands for those types of units. The theory is that if you have an all RCA home theater setup, if you turn on the TV, the receiver also switches to the TV input. Likewise RCA TV's use the same concept for switching their video inputs. In every case that I have seen, but with the exception of your power command, RCA uses the following device assignments and typical setup codes for all commands except AV inputs:

Typically they all use the same commands for the same function. For example, EFC 227 (OBC 058) = Power ON and EFC 219 (OBC 059) = Power Off and EFC 099 (OBC 0412) = Power Toggle.

Usually, Device 7 (SAT_0392) EFC 227 will turn on the DSS receiver and set the TV AND AV Receiver to the DBS input (if they are made by RCA), Device 15 (TV_0047) EFC 227 will turn on the TV and so on.

The whole point of JP1 is to change the factory settings by either Key Moves or a device upgrade or a combination of the two to make the remote work the way you want it to. You can do a key move from ANY device in the built in library OR any device upgrade. It does NOT have to be from the currently assigned setup code to a device button.

If you have a command on the OEM remote that is not one of the built in commands for CD_0053 or it's on the wrong button, then change it. Learn the command, if IR says it's device 8, assign that EFC using CD_0053 to the button that you want. If most of the buttons are wrong in CD_0053, then a device upgrade may be more efficient. If the command you want is something other than device 8, then use one of the setup codes above or a two byte key move from AUDIO_1254 if that device number is not found in the list above.

If there is a command that is missing that is not on the OEM remote, you may have to try all 256 commands possible using device 8. If there are more commands besides Power that use device 12, then you could try all 256 possible commands for device 12 too, but I will be surprised if you find many.
