JP1 Remotes

Hi All,

I recently noticed the sale of the RS 15-2117 here and so I picked one up for $15 yesterday as well as another RS 15-2116. (Thanks for the tip!!!) I bought an RS 15-2116 about a year ago and it has been working great.

However, when I try to program these new RS 15-211x's, neither one will pass the "Check Interface" in IR.exe. I double-checked and sure enough, my older RS 15-2116 passes just fine. So there doesn't seem to be a problem with my JP-1 cable.

I have tried the JP-1 plug in both positions on both of the new remotes, but they will not pass the check. I also notice that right after I click on "Check Interface" the LCD displays on both of the new ones fill with the character set, so there is some communication there.

On the inside of the battery case of the new 15-2116 there is a sticker that says "09A02".

On the inside of the battery case of the new 15-2117 there is a sticker that says "10A02".

On the inside of the battery case of the old 15-2116 there is a sticker that says "03A03".

Any ideas anyone?

1) Often check interface fails but you still can communicate, so you can upload and download without check interface. Did you try that?

2) Often someone reports a difference in JP1 behavior (works vs. doesn't) between two remotes, but later discovers the difference is between the two sets of batteries. Try taking the full set of four batteries from the remote on which Jp1 worked and puting them in a remote on which JP1 failed and see how that combination behaves.

My experience with three different 2117's and three diffenrent PCs (including a laptop) is that the IR to 2117 connectivity via JP1 is EXTREMELY dependent on the state of the batteries.

With fully charged batteries, I almost NEVER get it to work.

Once the batteries have a little "age" but are not yet "weak" I get intermittent connectivity.

My workaround, that almost always works, is - for uploads/downloads only - I REVERSE one of the four batteries - effectively reducing the battery voltage from 6VDC to 3VDC - and the interface works great. After disconnecting the cable, I return the battery to its correct orientation, the remote resets, and all is well.

During earlier discussions about this - some got extremely animated, claiming that reversing a battery risks overheat, leakage, and even explosion. I say BS, for the 20 seconds of the up- or down-load, nothing bad will happen.

If you leave a battery reversed for an extended operiod of time, I agree that it may leak prematurely, but I SERIOUSLY DOUBT it can overheat sufficiently to damage a remote, and I can guarantee you it won't blow up.

I did try to upload to the remote, but that failed.

That is the one thing I did not try was using the battery set out of the working JP-1.

I will try that this evening and see how it goes.
