JP1 Remotes

Been on this forum a long-long time. Started with a RS1994, then to the URC8811 (with extender). The buttons on my 8811 remote (and the 2 spares) are starting to wear out, so thinking of getting some new remotes.

Question:
Is RCRP05BR the same thing as the RCRP05B?
I noticed the extender is written for the "B", but now all you can get are the "BR"s. Would the extender work on the "BR"s?

Tried a search, but did not find anything. Thanks for any help.

I think the 'R' may mean 'Retail'?

Has anyone else experienced a short lifespan with this remote? I have already replaced it once and now my second one is also getting hard to operate. "OK" was the first key to stop working on both. Is there a better alternative to buying a third one?

have you tried fixing it? First thing to try is some contact cleaner on the PCB.

Where can I find instructions for doing that? I have no experience.

First, you would need to get yourself some contact cleaner, like De-Oxit, but any brand will do. This is really magic stuff, so it's always useful to have of this around. Not only will it work for cleaning the surface of the PCB in your remote, but if you have any volume knobs on radios or other electronic devices that are crackly, this will fix it. It will even get sticky label residue off surfaces. I use it for a million different purposes.

Anyway, what you would do here is open up your remote (search for different advice on how best to do that) and then spray some De-Oxit on the surface of the main remote circuit board (the PCB) and clean it off with a soft cloth or tissue.

Every OFA remote I have had tends to start having bad keys within 2 years or so. The 05B is no different. Oils get inside and contaminate the contacts. The 05B uses carbon contacts. You can open it up and wipe it down, but it only seems to help for awhile.

On mine, the CABLE button got the worst, with the right-arrow also very flakey. They would work, but you often had to hold it down for a second or two before it registered.

That's totally the wrong way to look at it, because one of these spray cans lasts for ages and it's got so many other uses too. I can't tell you how many electronic devices have failed and a quick spray of this stuff was all they needed to come back to life, that's why we all call it my "magic spray" over here.

If you've ever had an amp or radio or something that has a volume knob that crackles as you turn it, this spray will fix it. If you have a new glass bowl which came with a sticker on it, and you just can't get the glue stain off of it, this spray will remove it.

If the USB cable that you use to charge your phone doesn't always make reliable contact, this might fix that too.

After several attempts, all I accomplished was scratching my remote. Apparently, I am not skilled enough to get it open (or don't have the right tools).

For now, I have re-mapped the bad keys to other less-used keys that are still good. This works ok, but can get confusing for others in the house that can't remember to press D[Green] for OK.

Fortunately, this is a very cheap remote, so you can replace it for under $10

I have weak hands. I use a 2" plastic putty knife to open remotes. I find plastic putty knives don't scratch the remote, and I don't have to use so much force that I lose control and slip.

I recommend vizio vur8 6100.
It is less than usd 12 on ebay.
It has much better touch of feel than rcrp05b.
It is also samsung chip based, or so I think.
It has backflash light when you pressing buttons.
The drawback is it is only a 4 device remote.
