How do you backup a JP1 remote?

I’ve read through some threads & it seems I need either IR.exe, or RMIR.

From what I understand, IR.exe also needs an RDF file & DecodeIR.dll. And somewhere I read that it does not work with newer remotes. Will IR.exe work with an RCA RCRP05B remote? If I’m just backing up the remote is the RDF file & DecodeIR.dll really needed?

With RMIR it looks like Java needs to be on your PC. However Java did not come pre-installed on my Windows 7 PC & everything I’ve read says not to install it because it increases your exposure to getting malware. I'd rather not install Java if I don't have to.

I looked at “JP1 - Just How Easy Is It?", but most of that deals with loading an upgrade or creating an upgrade. Reading through it most of the stuff did not seem to pertain to doing a simple backup. Is there a simple tutorial on just backing up a remote?

Both IR and RMIR will work with the RCA RCRP05B. Java is a lot safer than the earlier versions. There are now security settings that allow you to turn off internet access. I prefer IR but last night when I changed all the connections on my TV and had to change all the discretes I wish I had all my upgrades in the same piece of software like RMir does. Also you'll eventually want to use the RM portion of RMIR.

Both RMIR and need the RDFs and decodeir.DLL to analyze the contents of the remote.

Both products let you do an unanalyzed Raw download, but what is the point? Sure you can quickly clone it, but the real value in a backup is that you can document the analyzed setup. Some newbies think that the documentation is stored in the remote but that is not the case. So add the rdfs and decodeir to your downloads.
