Is the 8811 modem upgradeable?

Since there is an "upgrade" section in the manual, I assumed the 8810/8811 was modem upgradeable. However when I followed the instructions for non-lcd upgrading, I do not get any sort of confirmation led flashes after punching in 9-9-7, nor do I get any confirmation after the wav file finishes. And, of course, the upgraded code is not found when I try to enter it. (I am trying to add the Sony Blu-Ray player code, FYI. I thought I could extend the life of this old remote a little while longer since finally buying a BD player.)
Thanks,
Joe

Joe, the 8811 doesn't have a modem, but it's able to learn.
You could learn the buttons of your sony remote and build an upgrade by your own.

Thanks. I think I might have already used up all of the learning space on the remote. It doesn't seem to be taking new commands. Probably time to upgrade. Is there a new equivalent of the 8811 or 8910?

The 8811 is an original-style JP1 remote; if you build (or buy) a JP1 cable then you can load "upgrades" into it that will replace the learned commands. You can replace hundreds of bytes of learned data with a dozen bytes of upgrade, and free up the learned space. My 8811 controls 6 devices, none of which were built in, and with no learned commands.

I know it's a JP1 remote. But I do not have the workspace to solder a cable together right now, and the retail cables are close to $50, since the only ones available now are jp1.2/1.3 + a jp1 adapter. I just can't bring myself to pay that much for a cable.

If I'm right, a should have a JP1 cable (parallel port) vacant.
OK, I must looking for this and will tell you the result.
I'm willing to sell this cable for 20$ plus shipping.
You hear from me.

Thanks. I think I have a parallel port available on a laptop docking station. Is there a way to get a parallel version working with a serial or USB port?

I don't know, but I think, it's impossible, since it's a very simple circuit.
I've buyed a JP 1.2/1.3 usb cable with JP 1 adapter ($ 30 + $ 20) from Tommy Tyler for 3 or 4 years ago and I'm fully satisfied (I owned a 5550, a 7550, a 7562 and a 7781). I think, such a cable is expensiv, but the best solution.

No there isn't. But you can use a different cable with a USB or serial port, like the one uwereinert suggested.

There are designs for building serial, USB, parallel port versions of JP1 cables but since you are not able to solder, you may have to use the JP1.2/3 cable + JP1 EEPROM adapter.

Gotcha. Again, since I have no idea if I will ever get a 1.2 or 1.3 model, I don't feel like investing $50 in a cable for two really old remotes.
Uwe, let me know via PM if/when you find the basic cable. I'll take that gamble.
Thanks.
