Serial JP1.2 interface: Can I use transistor VN2222LL?

Hey guys-
I'm taking another stab at getting my JP1.2 remotes up and running with a home-built cable. I tried this a couple years ago and the cable I built then seemed to work for a couple days, and then gave up the ghost. Anyhow, I was just looking at it again and noticed that I used VN2222LL transistors instead of 2N2222 as recommended in the guide. I don't really know much about electronics (I've just been following the guide to build my cable), is the VN2222LL an acceptable alternative? I don't recall why I chose this transistor to start with, but it certainly wasn't because I knew what I was doing :-)

The 2N2222 a NPN bipolar transisitor, while the VN2222LL is a FET transistor. So in spite of the apparent similarity in device number, the two transistors are quite different. If I were you, I would get real 2N2222 transistors. Actually there are lots of other NPN bipolar transistors that would work very well, but I'm surprised that a FET did work at all.

Try to get transistors for which the packaging shows the pinout, i.e. which lead is collector, base, or emitter.
