I've been using a couple of 8810s for many years. I've upgraded them many times over that time. I'd like to factory reset them but the LED's don't flash on either of them, ie. when I push any buttons, not just SET. I also tried Tommy's suggestion of removing the batteries, replaced the batteries and immediately tried a reset.

Is there something I'm missing or will I just have to live with the remotes as they are?

Do the remotes work? If I'm reading this correctly, the remotes do work, it's just the red LEDs that don't work. If that is correct, you could still do a factory reset using the 981 command, you would just have to pretend to watch the LED blinking.

In other words...
1) Press and hold SET for a second or two
2) Type 981

Of course, if you're a JP1 user, you could just load a clean IR file into the remotes as a way of resetting them.

Thanks for the reply Rob. You are correct, the remotes do work. I have three young kids so the remotes get abused but they are like tanks! I love them.

Part of the reason I wanted to do the reset was that I was trying to move from KM/IR to RMIR. I was having all kinds of issues and thought the reset might help. I got around most of problems but in the end I couldn't get RMIR (several versions) to upload to my 8810. So, after I posted last night I gave up and started using RM and the stand alone IR. That worked much better.

I did like the RMIR interface so I'll try to get it working after I get a JP1 USB cable. Many of my problems seemed to be related to the JP1 parallel cable I am using. I sent a note to Tommy asking if he has any USB cables available but I haven't heard back from him yet.

Honestly, you're better off sticking with the parallel cable for now. The USB one has a terrible driver that isn't being updated anymore (not Tommy's fault, but the chip maker's). It may not work at all on some PC's. I'd upgrade my remotes and cables to JP1.3 before putting anymore money in JP1, if I were you.

Try sticking with RMIR too, if you can. Yours is the kind of feedback Greg needs to work the bugs out.

Did you try doing a blind reset, using the steps I suggested?

Rob, I think the reset probably worked. The changes I made were overwritten. I thought I read somewhere else on the forum that that doesn't necessarily mean the reset fully worked so without the flashes I wasn't sure.

mdavej, Ok, I'll take your advise and stay with parallel. Part of the problem with the parallel interface is that the only computer I have with a parallel port is a POS so I was hoping to get it out of the loop.

I wasn't sure how actively RMIR was being worked on. I didn't want to push if it wasn't ready for prime time. I'll start another thread later today with some general questions I have and then retry RMIR this weekend.

If the reset wiped out your upgrades, macros, etc then it worked. The lack of flashes is because your LED is broken, not because the reset didn't work.

Btw, if you can work a soldering iron, it's pretty easy to replace the LEDs and you can get the replacements at Radio Shack. I'm no electronics expert, but the following part would probably work:

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index ... Id=2103802

I just checked Tommy's thread and he has the JP1 (EEPROM) USB cable listed, so I assume that he has them in stock. He doesn't like having to respond to emails and PMs about the cables, so you probably won't get a reply to your email. If you want one, you should just Paypal him the money and he'll send you the cable.

If you have no immediate plans to retire your JP1 remotes in favor of newer JP1.2/3 remotes, you might as well get a USB cable from him.

Sounds good, I'll try replacing the LED if I can get the case open.

I looked at Tommy's thread yesterday and it says to send him an email before ordering. I'll post to his thread and ask if that's what he wants or if I should just PayPal him. I do have two new 8910s as backups so I'll probably try the USB cable.

I just typed up an post for the RMIR thread so I'll post it in a minute.

Thanks again for the help.

Hey Rob, That page did help. Here's the fix. It certainly wasn't necessary but it worked! The LED was completely broken off when I opened the remote...

I have an 8810, and the visible red LED burned out a year or so ago. Maybe it's being overdriven. I replaced it with another one I had. The main IR LED is OK.

Did you make sure you oriented the LED correctly? One side of the base of the LED is flat. That side should be connected to the PC board where it is labeled LED- the other side is connected to LED+.
