Why can't I connect to my Atlas 4 via JP1?

This is the JP1 beginners forum. There's no such thing as a stupid question in here, so post away, but this forum is just for JP1 users and people considering JP1, non-JP1 users please use the appropriate forum above!

Why can't I connect to my Atlas 4 via JP1?

Post by philter »

I've been reading the last few days about the Atlas 4 and DVR/5 remotes, and see several people talking about how they reprogrammed them etc. I bought an Atlas OEM by Charter Digital Cable that has the jp1 pins, and I cannot get it to connect.

I've also got a 15-1994 which is working fine with IR 6.0. I opened the Atlas 4 into IR with the ATL0ATL0 (Atlas 4-Device).rdf file, but it reports the remote control does not respond when I try to download or just check status.

My Atlas is slightly different than the one listed on urcsupport.com, perhaps the insides of the remote are different/not-compatible? Please look at the pictures below and see if anyone recognizes the remote and if I'm wasting my time or not :)

The Atlas 4 I used in making the RDF file looked like the one on the UEI support picture you posted, so maybe you have a later model. I know of at least one other Atlas 4 version that is not JP1 compatible, but that one had the JP1 connector marked "JP1.2". Your pictue of the JP1 pins is not very clear, but it doesn't appear to say JP1.2, so maybe it's some other issue. Have you tried the usual tricks like taking the batteries out of the remote, etc.?

The plug area on mine has no other writing besides what is visible in the picture, and it says "JP1" with a white square next to it...I do not know what that square represents. The other markings are 2,5,6.

I don't know all the usual tricks, but I did try with and without batteries. I shut down IR, removed batteries, connected jp1, started IR. Repeated process but inserted batteries. Also removed/inserted batteries with IR running.

I am pretty sure I have the jp1 cable connected to the correct pins, the arrow on the jp1 connector is lined up with pin 1. When I have it like this, the remote does nothing..and IR reports "No response from the remote".

When I reverse the connector, the CBL red light blinks when I try to access it, but IR reports "No response from the interface".

I'm sure the interface/port is set up properly since my 1994 works. I bought my jp1 cable from hovisdirect.

Thanks for any help or information anyone can give.

It sounds like you may have a new version of the Atlas 4 that we have not seen before. As I mentioned, I know of one other version which does not work since it uses the newer flash-based processor. About all I can suggest at this point is that you take the remote apart and see what type of processor is being used. If it uses a chip covered with an epoxy blob, then it should be JP1 compatible.

Also, look for an EEPROM chip. All JP1 remotes have an EEPROM chip somewhere onboard (labelled U2). The new flash chips don't use a seperate EEPROM as they have memory in the main processor that is used instead.

Bummer. This is the remote I've been building the simple interface for to see if I can teach it to control my Zenith home theater.

The manual that Time Warner gave me with the remote doesn't call it an Atlas but it looks more like the Atlas 5 than the pictures of the Atlas 4.

It says that the model number it URC-1047, and the manual is dated 11/02.

I hesitate to open up the remote to see what's inside since I am borrowing it from the cable company.

There's a trick that Rob came up with to make it easier to open remotes without leaving any marks. The next time you buy something in blister pack, cut out a piece. You can slide this between the top and the bottom pieces of the remote to open it. Just make sure you take out any screws that hold the top and bottom together.
