Made progress, need guidance for Replay 5000 remote

Post by sumocomputers »

I have a ReplayTV 5040 Remote (with Commerical Advance) and my goal is to re-assign a couple of Replay buttons to functions for my Sony TV., Namely:

QuickSkip (30 seconds) -> QuickSkip (2 minutes)
Commercial Advance -> Sony TV Input Toggle
ReplayZones -> Sony TV Sleep Button

I have a JP1 cable purchased online, I am using the latest IR and RemoteMaster versions. I have opened the ReplayTV-5000.txt file into RemoteMaster, and figured out how to reassign the 2 minute skip to the normal 30 second skip button, and how to copy and paste the Devices and Protocol data over into IR. I dont think uploading or downloading the data will be a problem for me. Here are my two issues that prevent me from going further:

First question is regarding this statement in the easy tutorial by RobMan:

"Don't forget to assign the new setup code that you created to an actual dvice button! "

I am sure I am just missing something obvious, but how do I do assign the new setup code to the device button? Where is the new code to be found?

Secondly, what is the easiest way to get & assign the Sony TV codes? This is the part where I am totally lost. I would think if I knew the correct EFC number, that would be all I need, right? <feel free to correct this>

If there is another tutorial that you would rather direct me to than pounce on me for not reading this doc or that, I would kindly appreciate it, but a direct answer would be appreciated as well.

Thank You again.

The setup code consists of a device type and a 4 digit number.

In RM the (approximate) device type is displayed on every sheet near the upper right. The 4 digit number is on the Setup sheet near the upper left.

In IR, after you install the upgrade, the device type and 4 digit number (of all upgrades) are shown in a list on the left of the Devices sheet.

Having that code from either of those sources, go to left tide of IR's General sheet, pick a device button and set the Type and 4 digit code for that button.

It is best to use OBC numbers for Sony commands rather than EFC numbers, because each OBC has two possible EFC numbers that depend on how device numbers are put into the upgrade. Using OBC numbers means that RM manages that complication for you.

Also the best source of Sony command data gives device numbers and OBC numbers, and does not directly give EFC numbers.

The added complication is that Sony TV's use up to 5 different device numbers, but a simple upgrade will support only two device numbers. If you need more than two, there are more complicated combo's available, but since most functions will use the first two device numbers, it's easiest to use Keymoves with (an) extra upgrade(s) for any beyond two device numbers.

The R5k remote doesn't support keymover, so there's no easy way to do what you want, but you do have a couple of options.

One way is to use the Device Combiner to combine your Sony TV functions with the ReplayTV functions, then assign the functions to buttons as you see fit.

Another way is to use the extender for this remote.

I am glad you mentioned something, as I have been struggling to no avail. I was able to program the 2 minute QuickSkip, and that works fine.

I would like to go down the "Device Combiner" path. I have done some searches for Device Combiner, but I am not sure if it is integral to KM or RM, or if it is a separate program, but I cant seem to find it, or very much info on it. Even just a link would be great.

Also, regarding the Sony Code(s). I went to the Sony Codes page, clicked on TV, and found the main command I am interested in, TV/VIDEO. It shows it as command code 37, under the heading Sony 1. So would I just put 037 as the OBC or EFC? How do I know this will work for my particular TV? I do not see a way to look up model numbers.

Nevermind about the power. For some reason the Replay Power button is unassigned in the ReplayTV-5000.txt file. Just assigned the power function and it worked.

Thanks for the help and patience.

The Device Combiner is a special protocol built-in to KM and documented in the protocols readme (and on the [Protocol Help] sheet).

OK, I have read the device combiner instructions and I am getting a little stuck. I am attempting to use the device combiner (2-byte).

The instructions indicates you need the individual Protocol IDs and Fixed Data for each device (setup code) you wish to combine.

Well, I am trying to setup my Replay 5000 and a Sony Wega TV (as detailed in the post above). I have the Protocol ID and Fixed Data for the Replay, but not sure how to get it for the Sony TV.

It also states that I must start with a new upgrade in KM, but I am confused about how to do this, in light of the fact that previously I was loading ReplayTV-5000.txt.

Lastly (for now), once I get all this figured out I have some confusion about the actual codes for the Sony. I did go to the Sony codes page, but there are so many versions (like 12, 15, 20, etc.) I am not even sure what the codes are for the functions I wanted. I did go to the TV section, and as an example it show a command code for a TV of 37 for TV/Video under 12, so where does this number (37) eventually fit in?

I am really reading and trying, but with so many docs out there, sometimes it is confusing and sometimes there are apparent contradictions, but I know it is just a lack of experience on my part.

If someone had the mercy of a step by step (or partial step by step for the hard parts) for my particular situation, that would be great, but I have no problem doing it the hard way (little bits of help at a time).

I know you guys do not get paid. Thanks again for all the assistance.

You should open KM in Excel and do not use LOAD to load a .txt file. Instead just enter the Protocol selection and device numbers where requested.

The 37 is the OBC number.

It lists that within the table for device 1. Elsewhere it gives information from which you can deduce that device 1 uses the Sony12 protocol.

When you create a Sony12/15 upgrade in KM you should select device 1 as one of the two devices supported by that upgrade. That will affect the fixed data. Then on the functions sheet you must enter the OBC number (37) and the selection of which of the two possible devices the 37 goes with. That will compute an EFC number. Later you enter the fixed data and EFC number into the appropriate places in your device combiner upgrade.

Since I am not loading the ReplayTV-5000.txt file, and starting from scratch, am I going to have to manually enter all the settings for the Replay stuff (which previously was filled in for me)?

Also, I am confused what to put on the setup tab.

I am pretty sure the "Remote" should be Replay 5000 and the "Device type" should be VCR, but I am not sure about:

Setup Code (1614?)
Protocol Name (trying to combine Replay and Sony, should I use Sony 12/15? What happens to Replay protocol?)
Device Code(s)
Sub Device (if applicable)

Also, I keep seeing the reference to "Device Combiner Upgrade", but I am not sure what this is referring to.

Also, when I get to the functions page, I am assuming that for the Byte2 device selection, I need to put in "1" for all the Replay commands, and "0" for all the Sony commands? Or is it reverse? I know the notes say that it is automatic, but not sure which of the two is the default.

Lastly, when I get the spreadsheet all filled in properly, will I then be copying and pasting the upgrade and protocol code to IR, then uploading to remote, and that is it? Or will there be other steps in either KM or IR?

Thanks for the patience.

I would actually recommend that you do start by loading the Replay file. Then make sure that it's in EFC mode (if it's in OBC mode, use the SWAP button to switch it over). Then change the selected protocol to "Device Combiner" and follow the D/C directions. In the Functions sheet, you may need to add something to the byte2 column to indicate which of the groups of fixed data the Replay functions use. You will also need to add the EFCs for your TV and indicate which of the groups of fixed data they use.

Support for Device Combiner is also built into RM. Instructions for using it are shown in the "Protocol Notes" field when Device Combiner is selected as the Protocol.

I appreciate all the help, as I have gotten a lot further than I ever thought, and I know I am very, very close.

Using RM, I am able to actually map over the Sony commands to my Replay remote and they work fine. Now the problem is that when I press any of the Replay commands, the light on the remote turns red, but STAYS red (or hangs). I have to remove the batteries and insert again.

I also noticed that both in RM and KM, the notes state that "When using an upgraded protocol, the user MUST ensure that the protocol code is installed on the remote (using IR), as RemoteMaster has no way to verify this." I am not sure if I am doing this or not.

FYI, this is my procedure:

FOR RM:

FILE-NEW
Setup tab Protocol - Device Combiner
Setup tab Remote - Replay 5000
Setup tab Setup Code - 1614 (not sure if this is correct or not)
Device Combiner Tab - Import "ReplayTV-5000.txt", but manually add Sony 12/15.
Functions Tab - add my Sony TV/Video (EFC 239) and Sleep (EFC 49), and select the Sony as the combiner device.
Layout Tab - right click the buttons I am interested in, and assign them accordingly (most to Replay, 2 to Sony)
Output Tab - copy and paste the Device and Protocol data into IR

FOR IR:

FILE-NEW-SELECT-Replay5000
General tab The device button # 1 is TV-TV-0000 (I dont touch this)
General tab The device button # 2 is Replay-VCR-1614
Devices tab - ADD. then paste the corresponding data from RM
Protocols tab - ADD. then paste the corresponding data from RM
Upload to remote

Please remember that the Sony codes are working on the Replay 5000 remote, so I am really close. The problem is the the Replay remote hangs when I press any Replay-specific function (arrow up, quickskip, etc.) The remote does not hang when performing the Sony commands, and the Sony commands work properly (the button I assigned to change inputs on the Sony TV, changes inputs perfectly for example.)

Thank you

I think it is time to post your IR and KM/RM files. Zip them up and put them in the Diagnonsis Area at Yahoo. Then post a link to them here.

Just to let you know a little troubleshooting I have done, while waiting for diagnostic on my RM & IR files.

First I tried both setup codes 0614 and 1614, as I noticed that both might work - same issue, any Replay commands cause red light on remote to come on and stay on.

I loaded the original image of the remote that I took initially with IR - everything works fine.

I loaded the ReplayTV-5000.txt file, assigned one of the hacked functions (in this case 3 minute QuickSkip), using the Replay protocol, etc. - everything works fine.

If I use the Device Combiner Protocol at all, even without trying to load any Sony Protocols, I get the same problem. This is true with KM or RM.

So it seems to me, at least, that the issue is the Device Combiner Protocol with this remote.

I would be happy to use standard Replay Protocol, but RM does not support it, so next I am going to try the standard protocol loaded under Device Combiner in KM.
