Four-in-One Remote Control (15-1904) Operation Faxback Doc. # 47586 HOW THE 4-in-1 WORKS Before you begin to use the 4-in-1, it is helpful to understand a little about how it works - nothing technical - just an idea of what to expect from the 4-in-1. When you setup the 4-in-1, its command keys work like the keys on your original remote controls, though the labeling might differ slightly. For example - a key on your original remote control labeled PWR ON/OFF is equivalent to the 4-in-1's POWER key. Notes: When ever you use the 4-in-1's RECORD or QTR key, you must press it twice. This safety feature helps prevent accidental erasure of audio or video tapes. When you see references to TRACK + or TRACK - in this manual, you must press TRACK followed by the + or - key. When you use the 4-in-1 to replace extremely complex remote controls, the 4-in-1 might not have all the keys of the original remote control. But, in most cases, the 4-in-1 can duplicate all commonly-used commands from the original remote controls. (See "Alternate Functions" in Faxback Doc. # 47584). The A, B and C keys at the bottom of the 4-in-1 are special keys you use when you set up the 4-in-1 to replace your original remote controls. Note: The B and C keys are also used as command keys for some devices. The TV, VCR, CABLE, and AUX keys are device keys. You will use them when you setup the 4-in-1 to replace your original remote controls. You also use the device keys during normal operation to tell the 4-in-1 which device you want to control. To use the 4-in-1, do the following: 1. Press the device key for the device you want to control. 2. Point the 4-in-1 toward the device and press POWER to turn on the device. 3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for other devices. 4. Point the 4-in-1 toward the device you want to control and press the desired command keys. (The command keys on the 4-in-1 work the same as the keys on the device's original remote control; however, the labeling might differ slightly.) 5. To turn off the last device you selected, press POWER. To turn off other devices, press the device selection key for the device you want to turn off, and then press POWER. PUNCH THROUGH The punch through feature lets you alternately control two different devices without pressing the device keys for each one. Here's how it works. Not all of the 4-in-1's keys are used by any one device. For example, a TV is often the only device that uses the VOLUME keys, and a VCR is usually the only device that uses the keys such as REW, FAST F, and so on. When you press TV and then press VCR, the functions of any keys not used by the VCR, retain their TV functions. The punch through feature does not work if the last two devices you select have the same (or a similar) features. For example, most TVs and VCRs have CHANNEL keys on their remote controls. In this case, you would have to press the desired device key before you use the 4-in-1's CHANNEL keys. (BR/eb 7/20/98)
