Using the simple parallel interface, I get no error message when starting IR. with or without a remote connected.

When trying to Download, I get msg No Response From Remote.

I have checked and rechecked the wiring and everything seems to be ok.

I have tried setting the LPT port to both normal and bi-directional. What more can I do?

An alternative might be be:
I have an USB JP1.x cable. It seems to me that it ought to be possible to use that as the basis for use as a JP1 cable too, if only the right connections are made.

I am using this USB interface http://www.ftdichip.com/Products/EvaluationKits/TTL-232R-WE.htm
where I have direct access to all of the six wires so it should be fairy easy, but I would like to know the correct connections to make firs so I can be sure I don't create any problems.

"Simple Cable" (a parallel interface) is ONLY for JP1 remotes.

JP 1.x interfaces, whether serial or USB (I didn't think there was a straight USB cable, only serial via a USB-serial adapter) WILL NOT WORK on JP1 remotes. They will only work on JP 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3 (with caveats) remotes.

They are not in any way "convertible" from one (JP1.x) to the other (JP1) interface.

I suggest reading closely this post.

Out of curiosity - is there a simple explanation of what the differences are between JP1 and JP1.x?

I suppose that in both cases, the signal levels are TTL.
Are the data format/protocols different?

From the hardware guru himself, Tommy Tyler:

Para 10 of this document (Simple JP1 Interface instructions) discusses some of the specifics you seek, and

A Brief Chronological History of UEI Remotes and Interface Designs discusses the inner workings of the JP 1.X family.

There are other files that might help you understand (they are all beyond MY ken) in the File Section>Miscellaneous>Interface Designs section of the forum. Particularly, every Tommy Tyler construction instruction document has a theory of operation section at the end (Ultra, Serial, and USB interfaces in addition to the above)
