Remote Doesn't Get Updates

Hello,

I'm a semi new user of the JP1. I used it about 2 years ago and haven't needed to use it again. I am at work right now and I don't have access to all the correct terms, but hopefully my descriptions below will be good enough to determine what my problem is.

My remote is a 15-1994.

I wanted to make some updates since I have some new equipment in my set up. I was able to download the latest software and I hooked it up and I copied the "stuff" from the remote to my PC. It was successful.

I made updates in the tool (RM IR v1.82) and "uploaded to Remote". It said it was successful. I then disconnected the cable and the remote blinked 2x. But the remote didn't act like it got the new codes. The old codes were still working.

Since I had a hunch that the "upload to remote" actually failed, I download from the remote to my PC again and it showed the old codes in RM IR.

So - I am uploading to the remote, it says it was successful, blinks 2x but it didn't really download. I tried this several times.

So what am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

RM IR isn't ready for general use. It is available for testing and feedback, but should only be used for that purpose. You should be using IR.

Well that's not the first time I've been a beta tester! :P

Thanks for including the link to IR.

OK, I'm using the IR v7.06.

I set the VCR to 0618. Uploaded to the Remote.
Disconnect the remote. 2 lights.
The VCR button doesn't seem to have changed.

I reconnect, download from the remote.
The value of 0168 has been changed to 0060!

DEVICE BUTTONS:
Device
# Button Type Code
1 CBL/SAT Cable 0810
2 TV TV 0000
3 VCR VCR/DVD 0060 <-------
4 CD CD 0000
5 AUX1 Audio 0158
6 AUX2 VCR/DVD 0533
7 P&P CD 0167

It only changes its value if I disconnect. If I re-download from the remote without disconnecting, it stays 0168. Very strange!

I am ultimately trying to make the 15-1994 work with TIVO.

Any help is appreciated. If it will help, here is the whole summary:

Not really strange. What this means is that the remote is not resetting and re-reading the EEPROM. Resetting upon disconnecting the cable is common with the Simple interface and the older remotes. You can try the various battery tricks to see if your remote will reset properly with the cable attached, but I wouldn't worry about it... just remember to disconnect the cable after an upload and you should be ok.

It sure sounds like you forgot to actually add the Tivo upgrade to the remote's memory, in which case VCR/0618 would not be a valid code for the 15-1994. When you assign a bad code to a device button, the remote defaults back to the default code.

If you think you have been adding the upgrade, please post your IR file in the Diagnosis Area, then post a link to it here and one of us will take a look.

Forgot to add the upgrade? I think not! I never even tried to.

I think I'm starting in the middle here. Where do I find the TIVO upgrade?

OK - I found the Device Upgrade file

http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload ... ile_id=794

I'm trying to figure out where to paste it. I found one reference that says I need to paste it into the Device tab of IR.

But I don't know how to do this. I can't find the "How to do Device Upgrade" instructions.

15-1994 slow/no reset after upload

I am having a similar problem with 15-1994

After "Upload to Remote" from IR707 my remote LED blinks twice...then no response when I press Power to initialize the upload. Pressing Power works sometimes but other times it takes a while to respond (lately it seems to take longer...and often, can be several minutes, maybe 5 or 10 or more, if at all).

I have also noticed that the "red blinker" on IR (lower left corner) blinks twice, quickly on upload (it used to blink twice, slowly). When I disconnect the cable the remote blinks twice as it has in the past.

When I press the power button, often nothing happens, although on occasion (after waiting some time) the remote blinks 4 times (as it has done in the past when things work well) but then blinks again, twice. After this, the remote keys (volume, channel, etc.) seem to work but macros do not.

Any ideas on what may be happening, or suggestions on how to fix this? Thanks.

...update: a day later I found that uploading the program from IR caused the same problem on a second 15-1994 remote. Maybe a safe guess that the problem some type of corruption in the file. I loaded an older version of the program and the problem went away.

15-1994 slow/no reset after upload

...solved the problem by cleaning the button & PCB contacts inside the remote (including the power button) with alcohol & Q-Tip. Works like new.

It looks like the Power button made enough contact to function (for power) but not enough contact to allow initializing after uploads.
