JP1 Remotes

It's been a long time since I needed to change anything, so I bet I'm forgetting something simple...

I thought I had this working before, but now it's not. I've tried using the "Denon DVD-1710" upgrade, since it would seem to be correct, but I can't control anything.

Any ideas?

I've tried learning some keys, but the remote locks up when I hit them and won't come back until I remove the batteries.

Was this with the URC-6800 or the URC-8811? The URC-6800 has a bug in it's firmware which causes learned signals not to work in device modes that use a protocol upgrade. The symptom is usually just that the learns won't work, but I suppose it's possible that a lock-up could also occur.

I thought the usual symptom of that bug was lock-up.

You should download the eeprom image with those learned signals to IR.exe and look at the decodes of the signals. Then it should be easy to create KeyMoves matching those decodes so you can delete the learned signals.

The bug is just in learned signals within a device mode that uses a protocol upgrade. KeyMoves would have no such problem.

IIRC (and this was a LONG time ago), when I first got my 15-1994 upgraded by UEI to include the ReplayTV upgrade, I tried learning the missing buttons only to find that when I pressed them, the LED would start to light up but would very rapidly fade away, almost as if the batteries had run down all of a sudden.

But like you say, even if the learned signals don't work, they should still be saved correctly and can therefore be viewed using IR.exe. On the other hand, if you use the URC-8811 to do the learning, this won't be an issue as they bug was fixed long before that remote was made.

Was this with the URC-6800 or the URC-8811?

You don't need to relearn. Even though the learned signal doesn't work, it is probably correct. So you can decode it and redefine it as a KeyMove, which is probably better for you than a learned signal anyway (and much easier to copy to another remote).

As far as I recall (which tends not to be very good) on all occasions when I experienced that bug myself and when I answered posts from other users experiencing that bug, it was always a lock-up. The remote will execute random code depending on detail of the upgrade (and mabe of the learned signal). That could do almost anything. But a lock-up should be very likely. A reset (pause and then double or other blink pattern as the remote reinit's itself) is also very likely for random code. Rob's description (fail the current operation but drop right back into normal processing) seems less likely but certainly possible.
