Philips DVP5960 DVD player
1. Device: Philips DVP5960
2. Type of device: DVD player with DivX playback and HDMI output
3. Year: 2006
4. JP1/UEI Remote model: URC-7555
5. Do you have a JP1 cable? no
6. Still have original remote? yes
7. Checked the file section? yes, found this
8. Checked Pronto file section (at R/C)? Yes, nothing useful found
9. Partially working setup code? n/a
10. Learning remote question? n/a
In the file section there is a file for the DVP5960 but no idea how if my remote is able to accept this upgrade somehow?
I thought I found a code but no, I used the search function of the remote and cycled through them, after about 120 CH+ presses the DVD switched off, I stored the code but the code doesn't operate the unit (won't even turn the DVD back on) so no idea why it even turned off.
Other info:
I have tried all the philips codes (0539, 0646, 0675, 0503, 1818, 1158) and none work. I also tried the learning function of my URC-7555 and although the LEDs on the URC-7555 seem to register as I press the corresponding buttons on the Philips remote, the URC still doesn't operate the unit. I do know how to program the URC properly as I have successfully configured 4 other devices including custom programming in each mode.
I also had problems getting the URC to learn some commands with another cheaper DivX DVD player that I had (Amstrad DX3092) and it learned some commands but not all. I wonder if this remote has a problem with commanding DivX DVD players for some reason?
Anyone any ideas please?
Thank you for reading!

The file that you found for this DVD player shows that it uses the Philips RC-6 protocol with a device code of 4, which perfectly matches the DVD/0539 setup code. You say that you have tested the DVD/0539 code and it didn't work, which is surprising as it would imply that Philips must be using two different codesets for this player.
Can you please re-confirm that you really tried this code (and that the code is present in your remote). Read the following post to better understand the difference...

Thanks for the reply. The Robman wrote:Can you please re-confirm that you really tried this code (and that the code is present in your remote).
All I can say is that the 0539 code is in the URC-7555 manual and that's where I got all of the codes I listed above from. The URC also responds with a double-flash when I put the code in so I know it's accepting the code.
I will try it again today.
Perhaps there's something else that's contributing to the issue (you guys may know more than this than me). Sorry for not mentioning it yesterday.
I also have a DVD/HDD recorder (Pioneer DVR-420H) which is programmed into the DVD mode on the URC. Therefore I had to use the VCR mode for the Philips DVP5960. However, I took the correct steps to manually change the mode from VCR so that this mode is switched to be a secondary DVD button.
I could try the Philips code with the actual DVD mode, but I have a lot of custom settings for the additional buttons for the DVD recorder so don't really want to set them up again. However, as the Philips will become our main player I suppose it may become more important to have the URC commanding the Philips than the Pioneer.
Thanks for the feedback so far.
Regards
Update:
I decided I had no choice but to try the Philips player on the actual DVD mode of the URC. Well this works. But this is good news and bad news.
I think there's something wrong with either my remote or the documentation - I can't get the code that previously worked fine in DVD mode to work when in the mode accessed via the VCR button (even after following the instructions on how to change a mode from one device to another). The code is accepted but does not operate the device (Pioneer DVR-420H).
I therefore think that I am stuck with a choice of which DVD device I want to use and will have to accept that the other device cannot be programmed into the VCR button.
Unless anyone has any ideas on this?
Thanks

I'm not familiar with this remote, so I can't offer any advice specific to it as to why the MODE MAP function didn't work. DVD and VCR device buttons usually use the same set of codes, so you don't typically need to MODE MAP a VCR button in order to use a DVD code.
What steps did you perform in order to change the VCR button?

Was that a typo, did you mean DVD/0539?Loobster wrote:I also tried resetting the VCR key to VCR mode, the URC then still accepted 0631 but doesn't operate the unit.

I don't think you mentioned the 0631 code before so I didn't have any context for it.

Does this remote have a 6-pin connector on it? If so, it should be re-programmable using JP1, so you might want to consider getting a JP1 (or JP1.2) cable for it.

You shouldn't need to do a MODE change as the VCR and DVD mode are the same on this remote. The remote should accept VCR and DVD setup codes on either device button. If you decide to build/buy a cable, this is a JP1.2 remote and needs a JP1.2 or JP1.x cable.
You can also use the MAGIC-990 command to blink back a setup code for VCR device button.
Press VCR once.
Press and hold MAGIC until LED blinks twice.
Enter 9 9 0. LED will blink twice.
To view code for first digit, press 1. LED will blink back the first digit.
If code digit is 0, LED will not blink.
To view code for second digit, press 2. Use 3 for 3rd digit. 4 for fourth digit.

Thanks for those replies.
I take it this is the pin connector, Rob?

Binky, I'm not sure what you are getting at. I don't need to get a code out, I need to get a code in (that works). Thanks for the info on which cable I'll need though.
I think the main problem is with something going wrong when changing modes. Or given that you guys think that a mode change shouldn't be required, I have no idea why it just doesn't work. Put the same codes in DVD and VCR modes, the DVD codes work (both of them, with the relevant DVD device) in DVD mode but neither work in VCR mode. Wierd?
I suppose my next step is to get a cable then. I will need to brush up on the upgrade / flashing procedure.

Making one is not a bad idea. Looking at your picture, this remote looks like the one that somebody posted about recently saying that their JP1.2 cable didn't fit in the small opening, so you should try to find an IDC connector that's small enough to fit in your remote's opening.Loobster wrote:Hmmm....googled....nowhere in the UK to get a cable it looks like. May have to make one. Otherwise to get one from the USA is going to cost almost as much as the remote!
