Hi,

I'm a complete JP1 beginner so hoping someone can help me out.

I got a simple parallel kit from diygadget and built the cable myself.

It seems to work with an old URC-8550 remote - not done anything with it yet but I can download from remote ok (although it does say something about a corruption but lets me click ok to fix it and shows all the information seemingly ok).

I bought a URC-8910 from Rob's sale section and it just arrived today.

I've connected it to the JP1 cable but when I hit Download From Remote in IR, I get "No response from remote, check...".

I've tried new batteries and the ones from the 8550 as I read that can affect things - get the same on both.

What do I do now?

Thanks

Ian

Did you try reversing the cable? Have you tried with no batteries?

Hi,

No batteries - humm, didn't know that would work!

Just tried it with and without batteries - and the cable both ways on each.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Hi,

I've just done some more tests - on the old URC-8550, it seems to work batteries in, batteries out, new batteries, old batteries - no problem except the checksum error (is that normal?).

Does that prove the cable is working ok and i've made it correctly?

Do I have to do anything after changing the model of the remote? - it still says URC-8550 in the title bar.

With the new one it wont work with old, new, in, out, one reversed......cable both ways for all of those combinations....

Could it be the remote?

Thanks

Ian

I don't know if this will make a difference, but under File>New>Select, I think you need to change remotes.

Hi,

Thanks - that didn't work either.

I've tried everything in that thread - new batteries, old batteries, no batteries, battery reversed, spoon instead of a battery - all with the cable both ways round and all with 2 different computers - a desktop and a laptop.

The old URC-8550 seems to easily work on most of the above - I can't get the new URC-8910 working at all - not even a glimpse Sad

Any ideas....please!!

Thanks

Ian

Selecting the remote in that menu WON'T HELP.

The data received from the remote would override that selection. That selection does not affect the attempt to get the data from the remote.

JP1 access to the 8910 might be very picky about battery voltage even though access to 8550 is not picky about battery voltage.

Hi,

Tried as many different batteries in as many different combinations as I can find and still nothing Sad

Think i'll have to call it a night now...

Thanks to everyone who has replied.

If anyone does have any other ideas i'd really appreciate it.

Thanks

The obvious theory is the 8910 you got from Rob is defective.

I can't rule out the possibility that you did something wrong in constructing the cable that somehow doesn't matter for the 8550. But I can't think of a decent way to test that either.

I also can't rule out the possibility that you're doing something wrong in your attempts to connect to the 8910. But I can't think of any useful suggestions.

I think the bottom line is Rob will either have some better suggestions or he will tell you to sent the 8910 back for him to test/repair/replace/whatever.

Have you tried doing a full MFR RESET on the remote (not to be confused with an OPS RESET). Sometimes these LCD remotes need to be reset before they'll work, once the EEPROM gets corrupted.

If you can't get it working, I'll replace it. But part of my normal process these days is to test whether the remotes work with my JP1 cable before I mail them, so the remote did work just a few days ago.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the reply - it's good to know it was tested and did work and is not just faulty from the factory.

Problem with returning it if it is faulty is the postage to and from the uk will cost more than the $20 you sold me the remote for Sad

I'll do a search for that reset stuff and give that a try.

As my cable seems to work on the URC-8550, is it definatly built and working correctly, or does the URC-8910 use something extra or do something differently with it? - do you think I need to take it to bits and check through everything with the instructions?

Thanks

Ian

Hi,

Found out how to do the MFR RESET and done it - it said RESET RAM, then RESET E2.

Still nothing from the interface though, with different combinations of batteries BUT, doing a download does now seem to cause the remote to go from the normal display to a display with everything on as if it had been reset or something?

Does that give any clue to what's happening?

Thanks

Ian

That's ^ what happens when it downloads. What are you expecting to see in IR? Is it showing all 0's for the codes on the General tab?
