How can I take this thing apart w/o breaking it? There is something loose inside and it's annoying me. I want to fix it.

Last time I heard about something like this it was the modem coil that came loose. Use an old credit card, one side at a time, starting from the bottom and pry slighlty while popping a clip at a time. be sure to remove any screws in the battery compartment first. Note how the pieces come out, especially the keypad and lcd as you'll need to put them back together the same way they come out. It's been some time, but i think the other guy just left it out as the leads got broke in a way too difficult to solder back. It just kills the modem upgrade capability.

Jim is right. Here is a complete guide to how to open the case without damaging it, including pictures! Mr. Green

Maybe someone with a working 8910 can post a photograph. If I find the time, I'll do it.

hey thanks!! Although I think I found where they are soldered in, there are two small globs of solder on the board, so I will probably take it apart agian and flip the board over to see if a componet is on the back side of the solder, if there isn't, well I'd say I found it.

Oh, I just bought the old man a 8810w walmart edition w/o the lcd, would that remote also have the modem thing? I could just take that apart after he gets it for xmas then.

No, the 8810w and 8811 don't have modems.

The 8810 has neither the modem (included in the 8910) nor the empty position for adding an RF "puck" (the 8910 is a 9910 without the RF).

I don't know how either the modem or the RF attaches to the 8910 PCB. A depopulated spot could be either (if the modem fell off). Looking at an 8810 wouldn't help.

I wouldn't try to reconnect the modem. JP1 is so much easier to use and can do so much more than the modem.

I don't know if this would help you at all, but the schematic for the RS 15-1925 here shows the circuit for the phone modem used in that model. It's possible that yours is similar.

Sort of in the same vein...
I just got a new 8910 (yeah the one with the donut). The manual says the reset clears out the whole thing including the setup codes.

But.... it doesn't.

Do you guys know how to do a real reset back to factory defaults?

thanks

John

The manual supposedly describes how to return to factory defaults, but what it in fact describes is an "OPS RESET", which is the same as a 980 style reset on non-LCD remotes. Here's how you do a 981 style reset...

1) Hold SETUP (green P), till screen reads "CODE SET"
2) Press RECORD
3) Select MFR RESET from the LCD menu.

Thanks Jim. The manual only has the "980" reset.
