JP1 Remotes

I'm trying figure out the shift key thing on my remote. It looks like I have to press the green P key three times and then press the shifted key. Why three times.. does an extender make this work with only one key press?

Why is the shift key the "P" key. Factory setting? Can this be reassigned?

In an unextended remote any non-numeric button can be shifted by a single press and release of the P key followed by the button. For the numeric buttons, a double-press of P followed by the button is required, otherwise the remote thinks you're trying to do a direct EFC entry (P-#-#-#).

Yes, and for ALL buttons. Many extenders even let you reassign the shift key to something else.

Why is the shift key the "P" key.

That's what RadioShack wanted on their remotes. Many OFA's call it Setup or Magic.

With most extenders.

You can also do this without an extender by creating a macro (in IR.exe) on the desired button. A macro will override any other programmed use of the button.
<desired button>=SET[Setup] or
<desired button>=SET[Setup];SET[Setup] if you want a shift key that will activate shifted numeric commands without pressing the set key twice.

You cannot use the reassigned shift key to program the remote to enter new device codes, only the original key can do that; but you can use it for "shifted" commands. I use the "PVR Menu" button on my non-extended 6131 and "Guide" on a 6012.
