"Failed to open JP1.x interface" w/DIY cable

I have the DIY prototype cable, added resistors and cap. Plugged everything in (serial port and 8820 remote - tried both ways), IR700 Beta and get the "Fail to open..." message.
What should I look for?

Do you have JP1.x selected on IR's Interface menu?

Yes. It gives the same result with JP1.x or Auto Select (in which case it does select JP1.x)

Having same problem. Have tried two computers one direct to serial port the other with a USB->Serial converter.
Am pretty confident circuit is good, but may build another one tomorrow to check.
I have a OFA6 URC-8206
Fingers crossed.
Does the remote need to be in the setup or any particular mode?

When I plug my cable into the remote correctly, it does a reset (two flashes). The remote does not need to be in a particular mode.
Also in IR's current form, once you get the "failed to open..", you MUST close and restart IR. For some reason, it gets all bound up. So if you tried both ways, try restarting IR.

I rebuilt the interface from scratch being more careful and still have the same problem. "Failed to open JP1.x interface"
Would love it someone could offer some advice.
BTW does anyone know which is pin 1 on the URC-8206. You can't see it on the board. At present I am trying it both ways but neither is working.

The JP1 connector is upside down on all of the JP1.2 remotes that I have seen, which means that pin1 is in the upper right corner (as opposed to the lower left corner which is the standard position).

I have experienced the same problem.
Here is my post to the IR7.0 beta thread:
I have experienced the
"Failed to open jp1.2 interface"
Problem.
If I just connect a jp1.x interface (May 18/2006 version) between 10820 and PC, then start IR.exe, select jp1.x in the menu, the check interface will fail withe the message above. The download also fails too. The same problem happened on the revised (Aug 1st/2006) interface too.
Fortunately, I have an original JP1.2 interface (not the combined interface w/o few components, I mean the original design w/o JP1.1 at all), the JP1.2 interface always works. So I pluged it and both check interface and download worked. Then I plug the JP1.x (May 1Cool or JP1.x (Aug 1st), then check interface, download and upload are all started working. Not sure why, but I think it is a software issue, not hardware issue. Anyone experienced the same problem on IR 7.0 beta2? The IR.exe I am using is the beta 2 version, size is 1,137,152 bytes.
Thanks

Aaarggh!
I just realised I have put the transistors in the wrong way!!!!
Will have to swap them out and try again.
Another note.
shadsnz built a JP1.x interface while I am building a JP1.2 (though I was adding the components to make it a JP1.x when I realised the transistors are back to front). For a URC-8206 I should only need the JP1.2 correct? When I thought I had it right I figured I might as well try adding the three components to make it a JP1.x when I saw shadsnz who has the same remote as me and a working interface.
See
http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3543 for shadsnz post
Thanks,

Plugged it in "upside down" per Rob' suggestion, got the two flashes, fired up IR, still get the fail to open message.

Has ANYBODY here made this cable work?

Mine works fine. I did install the wrong resistor inadvertently when I first soldered the thing together. After looking at it, I replaced it with the correct value and it worked. There are a number of factors that could give the error message. Did you check your transistor orientation as suggested by tlad? Maybe rebuild the entire interface from scratch.

Did you manually select JP1.x rather than the auto detect? As I stated previously, each time you get a "failed...." you need to close and reopen IR. The check interface does nothing to get you out of it.

I have re-installed the transistors and it still doesn't work.
But I am no longer confident with the integrity of the circuit, all the twisting of wires etc. I could have easily damaged components.
Off to Dick Smith (Australia's Radio Shack) today to buy more components.
Will let all know how it goes.
Out of interest are people building the JP1.x or JP1.2 interface? I did build the JP1.2 then shadsnz, who has the same remote as me (a JP1.2 URC-8206) built a JP1.x interface, and has his working. Is there more chance of it working with either one?

My interface cable was supplied by DIY. I just added 2 resistors and a capacitor, both supplied with the cable. Pretty hard to screw THAT up!

What remote do you have?
