Sort of ignoring the template (I'm such a rebel

), I've got my eye on a Yamaha AVS 700 AV switcher now - again unencumbered by its OEM remote. No files for it here, but I've located one at RC that decodes to NEC1:122. There are several built-in setup codes that match this in my remotes, including AUD/0176 and AUD/1176 and CD/0187.

I've further built a KM upgrade from the Pronto file. Now there are apparently three additional functions not covered by the RC Pronto file that I located HERE

How do I decode these into JP1-usable data?

Easy, use IRTool. They're all NEC1 dev 122, here are the OBCs...

VOL+ = 26
VOL- = 27
MUTE = 28

Well, here's my consolidated upgrade using all of the codes I've been able to locate. Primary source was the above-mentioned ccf, plus the three additional functions from the motorola library referenced in the first post, as well, and I thew in the discrete on and off codes from the Discrete Code section of hifi-remote.com. It uses the relatively basic NEC1 protocol, device code 122.

Well, the long-awaited switcher arrived, I plug it in, and test it with my handy-dandy 8910. NOTHING WORKS!
Does anybody know whether or not there is ANOTHER Yamaha protocol/device combo that this might be set to an alternate of?

Or can anybody see anything wrong with my upgrade?

The manual does not seem to indicate there are any "unit codes" or anything of that nature with this device, nor can I see anything on the switcher itself.

Am I to resign myself to the fact that I bought a switcher who's IR receive capability is fubar?

I didn't notice anything wrong with the upgrade, so it should have worked. I did notice that you let the type and setup code default to CBL/0000, is that what you meant to do? And if so, did you assign CBL/0000 to a device button to test it?

Did you also try the built in AUDIO/0176 code to see if that works?

Yeah, actually, I used CBL/1176, but forgot to change it in the saved KM file. Anyways, I learned the upgrade signals from one remote to another, and they decode cleanly and correctly to the "required" NEC1:122 signals.

RCVR/0176 didn't operate the switcher either.

I'm pretty much conviced that the IR receiver on the switcher is busted.

Time to take the cover off and see what I can see. Anybody got a service manual for this thing?

Take a look behind the IR window. See if the IR receiver (pictured below) is loose or bent out of position. If you have a soldering iron, you might want to try re-heating the solder on each of it's legs, just in case there's a cold solder joint.

Wellsie, wellsie, wellsie! My unreasonable fear of opening up things electronic was completely unfounded in this case. For those who care, read on, for those who don't, skip to the code search request below.

Took off the cover, and looked. Where the IR receiver should be - NOTHING! no IR receiver, no wires, no perf board, nada!

I look around some more, to see if I can perhaps locate an unused plug on the main CB that would accomodate an IR receiver input, or some such ilk. It would probably have LEAPED out at someone more savvy, but it took me about 10 minutes to notice there was an IR LED-looking thing sort of jury-rigged from an unlabeled plug on the rear of the unit INTERIOR to the case just sort of dangling over the CB, and below it was another little bit, mounted in a housing, on a small rectangle of perf board, glued to a blank spot on the main CB. I kind of eyed it for a while and said to myself: "Self - that looks like it could be an IR receiver buried inside the case."

I worked up my courage and tried to pry the piece of perf board off the CB, and it came right off - it was attached with a piece of double-backed tape. Lo and behold, the three wires were PRECISELY the correct length to reach the appropriate hole in the front panel chassis, and the rectangle of perf board and receiver housing fit the hole perfectly, and the person who had modified it was even nice enough to have left the little plastic rivet that snaps in to hold it in place. 8)

A minute later, snapped the IR receiver back into its old location, powered it up, and all of the provided codes work like a champ! (see below for details) I guess someone prior to the previous owner had rigged a wired remote of some sort to activate the IR receiver internally, and the guy who sold it to me - although claiming up front that it came with no remote - had no idea. He even had the temerity to suggest that I might have the wrong codes!

HA!

But now the challenge deepens a bit.

New Code Search question

I have successfully tested the codes gleaned from the sources above:

The discrete on and off codes (generic Yamaha discretes) don't work, so I suspect the switcher is a Toad. No problem - I've dealt with Toads before. The rest all work correctly

Here's the problem. This receiver can select ONE input to go to the primary monitor AV output. That's the codes above.

It can also INDEPENDENTLY select a DIFFERENT input to go to the various "record" outputs (of Tape/VCR 1/2). These are selectable, as are the regular monitor input selections, from the front panel, but I have no remote codes for the "record" input selections.

I have no problem doing a code search, but wanted to give this forum one last shot to help me find these codes before I embark on that route.

This site seems to have buttloads of Yamaha codes, but I don't know what they mean. I've read some threads about this over at RemoteCentral but these translations make no sense to me. I've determined that the "Custom Code" somehow translates into the NEC1 device number e.g 7E=122, but if I'm not mistaken, that's not a direct HEX-DEC translation (is it?). Nor do I see how the "Data Code" translates into an OBC or EFC. (7E=29?) Help, anyone?

No. 7E=126.

Those custom codes do translate direct HEX-DEC into NEC1 device numbers and those Data Codes translate direct HEX-DEC into OBC numbers.

For someone who was acting pretty chicken about this sort of thing recently, all I can say is CONGRATS for taking the plunge and fixing it. Well done!

Yeah, but I'm still frustrated that there appear to be no remote codes at all for the "record input" selections nor for discrete on/off. At least the day-to-day routine "monitor input" codes are all good.

Going through your consolidated list of Yamaha receiver codes in the file section, ans well as a random selection of Yamaha receiver files at the Yamaha site, I've done what "logical" testing I could:

Tried every variant of "discrete ON" and "standby" codes from unit ID 1 and 2. "System power", Main power", "Zone 2 power", using a combination of NEC1 device 122, 125 and 126. None of them work - this must truly be a Toad. No biggie. I can either ToadTog it, or if I get too many out-of synch problems, leave the thing on. It's not like it draws any power when it's just sitting there.

As for the "record input" selections, the only potentially promising thing I saw anywhere was "Zone 2 input" selections, but unfortunately those didn't work either.

So now I believe I am truly down to the brute force code search, but I am NOT optimistic, since at this point, the only codes that work are the ones I got from that first Pronto file linked at the top - which is for this PRECISE model, plus the three Volume codes from the Motorola site - also for THIS PRECISE MODEL. Further, the pictures of the OEM remote and the descriptions in the manual make no reference to a capability to select the "record inputs" from anywhere other than the front panel.

Oh well, once again - and as usual - an incremental learning experience.

If the original remote didn't have buttons for those functions, I'm guessing that you'e SOL as video selectors don't generally have lots of secret functions, but you'll nver know for sure until you do the brute force thing (which doesn't take that long, and a true JP1-er would do it as a matter of course).

Remember, all you need to do is create some dummy upgrades will all of the missing OBCs in them. Assign all of the OBCs to buttons and then load the codes into your remote and test them.
