Sony SA TiVo S1 Remote (URC-9019B01) Eats Batteries

I've searched the forums for an answer but haven't gotten too far. This remote needs two fresh AA batteries at least once per month. I did a current draw test on it and, with no buttons being pressed, it draws a little over 7 mA. When a button is pressed, it goes up to 55 mA. We've had this remote since early 2002, and this appetite for batteries is something that has come up in the last year or so. I used to think that maybe it got stuck in the cushions of the couch overnight or something, but now I'm sure that is not the case. Any suggestions, short of throwing it in the trash?
