Samsung DLP TV (Samsung HL-P6163W)

Post by LHBrassell »

1. Device: Samsung HL-P6163W
2. Type of device: TV (DLP HDTV)
3. Year: 2004
4. JP1 Remote model: URC-8811
5. JP1 user? Yes
6. Still have original remote? yes
7. Checked the file section? Yes, found codes for Samsung HPP5063 at http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload ... le_id=1722 and http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload ... le_id=2700, but they didn’t work with my TV. Codes I tried were: HDMI, Component 2, Discrete On and Discrete Off. "Power" didn't work, either, so I assume it's not a near miss situation.
8. Checked the Pronto file section (at R/C)? (no or link to file(s))
Yes, nothing looked even close to my TV.
9. Partially working setup code? (no or setup code)
I sure haven’t found one.
10. Learning remote question? (n/a or explanation)
N/A, as I am trying to get some specific discrete codes and use the JP1 remote to train a Sony remote.

FIRST: As a simple test, try using built-in setup code TV/0060 to see if ANY of its functions work. If so, you can test the EFCs directly, without using an upgrade.

SECOND: I find it quite surprising that NOTHING from those upgrades works on your TV. It appears that ALL SAMSUNG TVs (DLP, PLasma, CRT, etc) use VERY similar code sets, and they all use the same protocol/device combination (NECx2:7). I question how you're adding this upgrade to IR. Can you please upload the KM file AFTER your modifications and the IR file that you uploaded to the remote that doesn't work? (and please post a link) - see the file section linked above. Go to the diagnosis area and click on upload.

THIRD: If you have properly installed those and they in fact do not work, then you will have to learn some signals. You're basically looking for discrete codes not found on your OEM remote, is that correct?

Although you are looking for functions not found on your OEM remote, the learning of a set of signals from your OEM remote can STILL be useful (and is, likely, essential to solving your problem).

Step 1: Learn all of the signals from your OEM remote - this may take several iterations as the memory fills up after about 25;

Step 2: Each time the remote fills up, download these into IR, annotate the notes fields to identify what function is learned to which button, and save the IR file with a unique name.

Step 3: Use the decode information in the learned tab to build your upgrade in KM or RM, or at least examine what protocol and device it uses, and make a list of the OBCs for each function. (and/or upload these IR files to the diagnosis area and post a link to it here for someone to take a look) - at this point you have a list of OBCs that are used, and more importantly, a list of OBCs that are NOT used - these are your candidates for your code search.

Step 4: The protocol/device information from the learned signals will be required to build the upgrade from which you may end up trying some unused OBCs to identify the discrete input functions you're looking for.

Step 5: At this point you want to apply some logic - look at your learned list vs the other Samsung upgrades. They may not have worked due to using a differnet protocol/Device combination, but may still use the same OBCs, so you could try those. Or look at the used vs. unused OBCs and look for obvious gaps to try in your search.

Standard manual code search caveat.
Some devices, in particular TVs, have remote functions that will call up a service mode (not so bad - just back out of it) or conduct some sort of master reset (real bad) that have been known to render them inoperative. I must admit that I have only ever heard of this wrt to certain brands of CRT sets and certain LaserDisc players, but - there is always some element of risk. I did a manual code search on my NEC Plasma TV and nothing untoward happened.

Thank you very much for the assistance. I don’t know what I was doing wrong yesterday, but since you indicated that all Samsungs should use similar code sets, I did a master reset on my remote (Setup 980, as described in http://www.hifi-remote.com/wasser/), then used TV/0060 and found that the power key did, in fact, work with my TV.

Then I tried these discrete codes, which I found at http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/mb ... d.cgi?3784, and had success:
001 Discrete on
253 Discrete off
061 HDMI
061 Component 2

I am very grateful for your suggestions. Thanks again.

Oops, typo above, that should read:
067 HDM1
061 is the correct code for Component 2, though.

Just for your info, the 980 reset is NOT the "Master" reset. The 981 reset is a true "master" reset. The 980 is called an "Ops" reset.

Thanks for the correction; I have a lot to learn in this area. On the other hand, with the files and programs I’ve found here, I’ve already got a remote almost completely programmed for one of my two HDTV/DVD/receiver systems. So I may finish the task with a lot of stuff not yet learned.

A further question: on my Samsung, it occurs to me I would really like to use discrete codes for “wide” and “4:3” picture sizes. I did not find them in the upgrade files here in either http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload ... le_id=1144 or http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload ... le_id=1145. I did find reference to them in a thread at http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/mb ... i?3884,1#3 (211 for 4:3 and 204 for 16:9), but cannot get them to work for me. From the service menu, my TV seems to have version 1035 of the firmware (T_ATLNUS_1035).

I am pessimistic, but does anyone have any suggestions?

I have the same problem with my NEC plasma - and am SOL. If you're only toggling between two states, you could use ToadTog, but if it's three or more (in my case there are four "widescreen" states), it would become a very complex series of concatenated logic threads  to keep track of what state you're in - I once started down this path but never got there.

Well, I guess I am as lucky as possible for being SOL, as there are only two states possible for aspect ratio in this TV -- 4:3 and Wide.

Except that my goal is just to use the OFA to train a Sony universal remote that's going to be the "real" remote for that room. So toadtog probably doesn't help me. But it's worth a mention; maybe it will help someone else who gets here via google.

Seeing all of the limitations you're facing, that would NOT be limitations with the JP1 remote, why don't you take the plunge and completely convert to JP1! 8) Use the 8811 as your primary remote, and return the Sony universal for a nice refund!

Go ahead, take the plunge!
