JP1 Remotes

You would think they would be happy because the jp1 mod greatly boosts the usefulness of their remotes, but obviously this isn't the case. Is it because they are afraid no one would buy their expensive models if they knew about jp1?

Because they don't want to provide support for people who try to use JP1 and get into trouble.

I'm sure the number of JP1 users is such a small fraction of their business that they're neither very happy that someone buys a JP1 remote rather than some other brand of more expensive remote, nor very unhappy that someone buys a JP1 remote rather than one of their more expensive models.

I expect another reason for their lack of attention to JP1 is that they know any hint of official approval of JP1 would flood their support phone lines with stupid (or non stupid, which is even worse) JP1 questions. I'm sure they depend on the fact that the vast majority of universal remote customers never call with a question. That wouldn't be true of JP1 users.

But they could always have a disclaimer about jp1 capabilities so that support isn't responsible for those questions.

There's no such thing as a disclaimer, if it's there people will call. The 15-1994 remote supports macros, for example, but this is deliberately left out of the printed manual because Radio Shack didn't want to support it.

Just FYI, UEI (the guys behind these remotes) have come around to un-officially approving of JP1. The last guys behind OFA (ie, a company called Impact) we're also very supportive, and the news guys (CT Global) have been OK so far. The only ones who still have their heads in the sand are Radio Shack, and they seem to be drastically scalling back the number of UEI remotes that they commission.
