JP1 Remotes

I'm not sure where this should be posted, but I got an error message on one learned button (VCR UP). The message requested that I upload the file to the diagnosis area in the files section and then post a message to that effect. The file name is: URC-8810 with learned signal problem.ir

I'm not sure what to make of that, but here's what I was doing. I printed the advance codes for VCR_0035 so that I could enter them in ir without the need to learn the keys. It all worked, but the EFC values didn't work. So, I bit the bullet and learned the keys. I then did a download from the remote to see what the values should have been. I'm still a little puzzled partly because of the error and because the other keys showed several EFC values like 052 or 060 or 036 for the value to get OSD (on screen display) when pressing the INFO key on the 8810. So which one is it? I found 036 in the lower code area (VCR 102) for Display. Any advice on how to figure out which values to use in these advance code tables? What I want to do with the UP/Down remote keys is this: Down will set the start time for One Touch Recording and the Up key will set the duration of the recording. The key on the Magnavox remote which does that is labeled "OTR" above the key and "ST" on the key. It is a rocker key. I assume that, once I determine the correct EFC values, I can enter them in the Key Move section of ir, delete the learned keys, and save memory. Correct?

When you post a file that you want someone to look at, please post a link. If we have to go hunting for the file, we probably won't bother looking at it.

It is considered good form to actually provice a link to the file you uploaded, rather than just the name, so that the busy experts who know enough to help you don't have to go looking for your file by name.

Sorry about that! I wasn't sure how to do this thread. The message in ir simply said something like, please post this (I assumed the whole ir file was meant, not just a cut and paste from the error message). Anyway, is this what you need:

I'm not sure what the proper procedures are on topics like this. Blame it on my newbie status. Hopefully, I've gotten it right now. In any case, I wasn't so much looking for help as I thought I was helping the experts here. At least that's the way the error message request within ir was worded.

As far as I can tell, there is no difference between the 2 links you posted.

They'll do just fine.

That error message should be reworded in IR.EXE. We've seen plenty of these and are no longer curious to look at more.


But in this case the fact that you uploaded that file makes it easier to answer your questions.

For example, that list has two different EFCs for "Display", 191 and 036. The learned signal you have on the Info key is EFC 036, so I assume that is right and 191 is wrong.

In this case that error just means that the 8811 failed to detect the repeat pattern of the signal and instead stored a bunch of copies. DecodeIr reports all the copies are the same, so that is a pretty clear indication that it is a simple repeat pattern and the learning system of the remote just failed to understand it.

For the setup code VCR/0035 any decode of device 2 uses the first of the three listed EFCs. Any decode of device 3 uses the second; and any decode of device 25 uses the third. Since the Info key is device 25, the correct EFC is 036.

I tried to explain that concept more generally in the DecodeIr documentation, the secion at:

but that's rather hard to explain generally. For a specific built-in setup code there are specific rules (as I gave above for VCR/0035). But decodeIr doesn't know which setup code you will be using (nor does it have knowledge of what's in each setup code to apply even if it did know which you want to use).

Those tend to be random combinations of partial data from multiple different models using the same setup code. So there are no rules to figuring out which of multiple answers to use from there. Those pages are mainly for non-JP1 users who have no better choice than just test each listed possibility and see if it works. With decoded learned signals you can be more systematic.

Correct.

The EFCs for the up and down signals you learned are 181 and 185.

One more etiquette question: I read somewhere that it is my responsibility to remove the file I uploaded. I assume the way to do that is obvious, but how long should I wait before deleting it? Or will you delete it?

The first link was just a cut & paste of the URL, the second link had [url] tags wrapped around it. Visually you can tell the difference because the 1st one is underlined all the time, whereas the 2nd one is only underlined when you do a mouseover.
