JP1 Remotes

I want to program my URC-8810 for my Boston Acoustics 6000 system without having to learn all the buttons (some don't work anyway). Jeff, in a previous thread of mine pointed me to the BA 7000 upgrade file in the files section of this site. I downloaded it, opened KM, clicked on the load button, and got the following error:

*** Unsupported or unrecognized Protocol ***

What is wrong? When I open the upgrade in a text viewer, it appears to have all the information, but won't load properly into KM. Is it possible that the upgrade file isn't compatible with the latest version of KM? This note appears in the "Invalid Protocol ID box:

Upgrade Protocol 0 = ## ## (S3C8) 0 = 1-byte (KM v8.31)
Code cannot be calculated...

On the Boston Acoustics file in the files section, right click on the download button and select "Save target as..". This will download the file correctly. Files download with a left click have some problem with the new line/line feed characters. They look OK in a text editor but don't load into KM properly. There are several previous posts on this problem and IIRC you can also load the file you downloaded with the left click into Wordpad and then save as a new file name. The new file should load into KM OK.

I just downloaded the file with the "right click/save target as" method and it loads OK into KM.

Sometimes, even when you download via a right click, there is an ASCII vs. BINARY issue anyway. When you open an affected file using Notepad the data will appear scrambled and there will be many black squares all over the place (see pic below).

To fix this, I open Wordpad then I cut & paste the data from Notepad over to Word pad, which automatically corrects it, I then cut & paste it back again.

Thanks, Bill and Rob. I used the right click and it worked. My 8810 now controls my BA 6000 system. I guess I'll use the L keys to add functions for switching between DVD/DSS, Audio, and Night. Those are keys I use on the BA remote.

I guess I'm all set for now. A future upgrade to my system will be a Panasonic DMR E55 DVD recorder. It doesn't appear that the 8810 has any buttons with intuitive labels for controlling the record aspects of that device. For example, time slip, recording mode, etc. Has anyone figured that out or found a remote for less than $100 that would work? I wouldn't consider the Kameleon because of the poor battery life and the lack of hard buttons.

What you have to do is first assign all the obvious functions to the matching buttons, then take a look at what buttons are left. Then you have to try and figure out assignments that you will remember in the future, which means you have to use some sort of logic for chosing the buttons so that when you can't remember which button is which in the future, you can use the same logic to figure out where you placed the function.

It's for this very reason that alot of people opt for the MX-500 remote, which has an LCD panel where you can re-label the buttons.
