how to control identical devices

I have 2 identical satellite receivers that I want to control individually. Is there a way to control each device individually?

I'm assuming they're in the same room?

Could be tough, since I'm not aware of any Sat receivers (except for DirecTiVos) that allow addressing of the boxes.

Yes, they are in the same room connected to a dual channel modulator for whole house distribution. I am using rf remotes to control them from different rooms in the house.

What make and model are your SAT receivers? Some of them have ways to set them so they respond to different IR signals.

If they are DirecTV receivers, you can go to http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/learn/Manuals.dsp to look at the manuals if you no longer have it.

Some remotes with RF extenders have ir emitters that you can paste on your devices which are addressable. Some such are in the Home Theater Master line of universal remotes. I don't know about the 15-2117 which is of course much less expensive and JP1 compatible, as are a couple models of the OFA line.

Many sat receivers allow for unit codes, and they should even describe this feature in the manuals, but we can't provide any help unless you provide alot more info.

Many Sats have multpile remote addresses,

RCA Sats have two, their UEI equivalent codes are 0392, 0855 or 1107.

Hughes has Six, UEI codes for two of them are SAT 0749, 0819.

The newer D10 codes are SAT 1377, 1378, 1379, 1380.

You get the Idea.

Most Echostar receivers support addresses, and the Motorola DSR line does too, but in those cases, you have to make upgrades for the additional addresses.
