Is there a way to test a code without having it programed to a button on the remote?

If you have a compatible setup code programmed to a device key and that setup code supports EFC numbers and you know the EFC number for the command you want to test, then yes.

Do a short press and release of the Set button (or P or Magic or whatever it's called on your model), then key in the three digit EFC number. The signal is sent while the third digit of the EFC is pressed.

How can you tell if a setup code supports EFC numbers? I am using the Pioneer master list from the files section.

The master list uses the "Pioneer 4DEV" protocol, which uses 2 bytes of variable data and therefore does not support advanced codes.

It doesn't.

For an upgrade, you can look at the size of Hex commands in IR.EXE or (a little more reliably) in the Hex column of KM's Functions tab.

For most models of remote (any using 3 digit EFC numbers) the hex command must be one byte or EFCs won't work on the remote itself.

For built-in setup codes, you may need to ask an expert (and that needs both the setup code and the remote model, since some setup codes vary among models).

I am trying to program my remote for a Pioneer VSX-1014 receiver. I am starting with the Pioneer master list. There are many codes in the master list I do need/want or know what it does. I loaded all the codes into the remote without assigning them to buttons and was going to test each one to see if I needed or wanted a particular code. It looks like I can't do this because it's using OBC. Anyone have a completed upgrade for a Pioneer 1014 receiver?

Create an upgrade with as many functions programmed to buttons as you can, then create more upgrades that contain the rest of the functions until you have them all covered. Then load all of these upgrades to your remote and assign them to as many device buttons as necessary.

Then test them using the remote to see which ones work.

Once you've determined which ones work, create a new KM upgrade with just those functions included.
