JP1 Remotes

Ok I know my code that i am looking for which is a sony home theatre in box, remote says AV system 3. There is a code for this but just not in my 8811 remote it is in one of the 9xxx series remotes...would i be able to get a original download of one of these remotes and then do an upload using IR and JP1 to my 8811 and have it work. does any of that make any sense or should i just learn all the functions i want and create my own using KM...

Basically NO. That would be hard if it were a pre-installed upgrade and impossible if it were a built-in setup code (which is more likely).

That's the good fall-back for whatever you don't find on that site I mentioned. Using that site should be a little easier and may have working codes your original remote is missing. So try there first.

Sony is by far the best documented brand as far as IR signals goes, just about every Sony signal known to man is listed here:

Your URC-8811 is a learning remote, so all you would need to do is capture a few buttons from the Sony remote to confirm what device codes you need, then you can check the upgrade files in the file section to see if any are compatible. You would also be able to use the code lists on the site above to create an upgrade from scratch, and of course, you could use learning to capture all the buttons and create an upgrade from scratch that way.

Be aware that most Sony systems have an AV1 and AV2 mode (and maybe even an AV3 mode). These AV modes change the device codes that are used but they don't change the OBCs used for each button, so if your device is in AV2 mode but the upgrade file that you download is in AV1 mode, all you probably need to do is change the device codes and the upgrade will work.

If this is all too confusing, once you have a JP1 cable, just learn a few buttons and report what codes they use and we'll help you.

within that page you'll see several groups of commands. How you handle it via JP1 will depend on which of those groups you need.

The first group is for the Sony15 protocol, device 80. As you can see it includes OBC 21 for the power command you mentioned.

The second group is for Sony15, device 208.

It's pretty easy to combine two different Sony15 device numbers in one upgrade. But combining more than that requires a different choice of Sony protocol within KM or RM.

Probably you can find an existing upgrade file that already combines the device numbers and most of the commands you need.

yes i have that page bookmarked have absolutely no idea what i am supposed to do with that information i have read the guides but i guess i am just not getting it. is there a specific guide that would help me or am i just not getting it and i am hopeless...LOL

The first Sony HT upgrade I looked at Sony_DAV_C770.txt seems to be a combination of exactly the set of Sony device numbers you need.

It demonstrates one of the ways of combining device numbers. The chosen method is with the "Device Combiner" protocol.


Initial creation of such an upgrade requires some extra work (not shown in the upgrade itself) to find the sets of data that go in that lower left section of KM's setup sheet (open that upgrade and see). But since that work was already done for you, you don't need to worry about it.

Next look at the functions sheet in KM.

Notice that the EFC of each command is in column B and the choice of which of the four device numbers goes in column C. The fact that you must work with EFC numbers rather than OBC is one of the disadvantages of using "Device Combiner" for a Sony upgrade. But that Sony site and several other places give instructions for translating Sony OBC numbers to EFC numbers, so that doesn't add too much extra work.

Edit: Assuming the comments are correct in that KM file. It includes the 26.73 device and not the 26.83 device. The comments on that Sony codes page imply a newer model would need 26.83 and not 26.73. Either by testing codes or by learning and decoding codes from those groups, you should determine whether you need 26.73 or 26.83 or both.

There is another upgrade file Sony_Dream_System.txt for the same basic set of commands. But it includes more device numbers and is presented in a clearer form by using a Sony combo protocol rather than using the Device Combiner protocol.

That one also leaves out 26.83, but makes it a little more obvious how to add 26.83 in case you find that you need it.

The Sony Combo protocol works with OBC numbers rather than EFC numbers so it corresponds more clearly with the data on that page of Sony codes.

A tricky combo code-set like this is starting at the deep end of the pool even if you had read and understood that help document.

The best way to start a JP1 upgrade is to find a similar one someone else already built. The two I mentioned (especially the second one) get you past most of the tricky combo issues, as well as having many of the desired functions already entered.

I actually was able to upload the file you recommended successfully some functions work some don't so i will be reading that guide link that rob gave me for some reason i have found a whole bunch of them but not that one before probably just missed it so i think i am good for now...i will play with that one see if i can add functions change buttons and things like that. thank you all for your assistance today

What is the model of the Sony system? I am an authorized Sony servicer and may have had one in the shop. I did a RemoteMaster file copied from the HCD-FC7 remote. here
I also have one I cobbled together for a HCD-S300 (not posted since there are several similar KeyMaster files -- I changed the search functions since Sony has 3 or 4 sets of search commands that work strangely on different units)

Sony Dream systems cover at least 3 different remote designs so the model may help pin down which upgrade is the most likely to work.

the dream system i have is hcd-bc250...thank you to rob and johnsfine as i have now created my own code for my dvd player that was another one that was not in my remote...the sony system is just more complicated but now that i have things down i will go froom there but any help anyone can offer will greatly be appreciated...
