JP1 Remotes

Hey all,

I'm a complete newbie at this so please forgive if the following has already been answered or I've posted in the wrong place. I've searched through a fair bit of this forum looking for similar problems but can't see any answers, so here goes...

I cant get my remote to learn, I've tried loads of positions an even with the light off, but no joy. I do exactly what it says in the manual and all is well until the display comes back on and instead of the double flash i get a single one indicating an error. So i tried with a different teaching remote, just in case, then all the remotes in the house, and still no joy!

I checked the status of the memory using the IR program via my home made JP1 cable (excellent instructions on file) which shows nothing learned so there is plenty of space. I was trying to learn my DVD remote because I've found nothing of the same make in the yahoo files. Similarly i can't find any codes to control my Digital 'free-view' STB and have no remote to learn from.

I'm a bit stuck and having carefully installed the 6 pin connection in the remote hope that i don't have a faulty unit meaning i can't send it back.

Please advise if there is anyway i can test the learn feature, or can someone point me in the right direction for the following:-

DVD player: Cambridge Audio DVD55 using an RC-DVD53B remote
Codes found on UK UEI site: 0696,0751,1084,1109,1124,1146

Free-view STB: Strong srt5000t remote unknown
Codes found for SAT Strong on UEI UK site: 0369,0520,0879,1105,1158,1159,1300,1473,0373,0421,0613,0853,0872,1166

I have tried alot of the SAT Strong file on Yahoo but with luck, I have managed to upload the marantz sr5300 codes so it can't be just me, can it? Any guidance you can offer will be much appreciated, thanks in advance.

Make sure the batteries are fresh (in both remotes). Weak batteries are probably the biggest reason for learning troubles.

Another option is to save the current configuration in IR and then do a full reset of the remote. Sometimes that can help learning problems as well.

I will try some new batteries this evening, when I get home.

I tried the master reset from the instructions in the manual. I will do it again once the new batteries are in.

If the learning feature does not work would the remote? What I’m getting at is if the little diode thing at the front is giving out a working signal then it can't be that part that’s at fault for the learning operation?

I'm just wondering that’s all, I will try the new batteries and post the result.

The true reset command is never printed in the manuals. The manual will mention the 980 command for doing a reset, use 981 instead to do a full factory reset.

From memory the manuals command was 977 to reset.

I will try the full reset with my nice new batteries. Fingers crossed all will be well.

I still have the problem of my set top box but will cross that bridge when i get to it.

Will post my results.

Tried the learn after the reset with brand new batteries, still no learning. All i get is a long flash, any ideas please? I'm stumped.

You might want to make sure you're using the learning procedure properly. I'm not sure what the exact steps for the 9960 are (and can't check right now either), but you might be missing or not understanding a step along the way.

I hope so.

Here's what I’m doing: -
1. Hold down setup (two bottom IR's flash)
2. Press the IR LRN button once
3. Press the DVD icon (all display lights up)
4. Press button to learn (display goes off)
5. Press and hold button to teach (display comes back on and bottom IR's unfortunately flash once)
6. Let go of teaching button and try again from point 4.
7. Get depressed.

I guess this now leaves me with few options?

Here's the correct procedure:

1. Position remotes head to head
2. Hold "SETUP", 2 flashes
3. Tap "IR LRN"
4. Tap a device key (ie, TV, VCR, etc)
5. Tap a URC-9960 button (ie, the one to be programmed)
6. Hold teaching button on original remote, until the URC-9960 flashes twice.

However, I'm a little concerned about the wording in the manual, which reads...

5. On the OFA Kameleon 8-Device Remote, select and press a desired key where the learned function will be stored.The IR segments will display an incoming animation, continue for three revolutions, and then the entire display will turn off.

After the display is off, press and hold the teaching key (on your original remote control) until the display (on the OFA Kameleon 8-Device Remote) turns on again.The two bottom IR segments will flash twice when the code is successfully captured.

I haven't learned using a Kameleon myself, but I don't believe that you should wait for the animation mentioned above to stop.

Right, I gave the teach button a press (and held) before the animation, during the animation and after. Still just one long flash.
Do you think I should try the customer services in US?

Only other option is to find something in the yahoo files and download to remote. I've searched pretty hard tho and can't find anything to work either the DVD or STB?

Are you trying this with the same teaching remote each time? Have you tried learning from any of your other remotes? This would help us determine if it's a problem with the DVD remote's signal, rather than user error or a remote problem.

Unfortunately it is with all the remotes in the house. None of them work.
I have tried learning from the remotes of two TV's (Panny & Philips) and the DVD (Tosh) that all worked from the setup codes in the manual after a full reset and still nothing.

I tried last night to get in touch with US customer services just to ask if they can do some sort of check over the phone. I couldn't get through, so will try again from work as its a fair bit cheaper! I will try the UK branch in the meantime while you guys get some sleep,

I feel quite bad about all of this, but thank you for all your kind help.

Called the 'UK' helpline, spoke to a dutch fella, told me to call the US helpline.

He did mention that the learning memory 'may be locked out', but told me to consult the US cos they knew it all.

Will do some more digging on this 'locking out' subject.

Right,

I called the US customer service and he talked me through the learning procedure. Nothing, just one long flash. He concluded that there may be a fault with the remote.

We also tried to download the correct setup codes for my devices via the modem link, this also didn't work, possibly because the phone wasn't loud enough. However, he did tell me the update codes for my devices were as follows: -

Strong 'Freeview' box - 0226
Cambridge Audio DVD - 0690, 1916

So now I’m going to have a look through the yahoo files to see if I can anything similar.

Please advise if you have any ideas, I’m quickly losing all hope.
