problem with USB cable on laptop

I have an IBM thinkpad A31 and I bought a USB cable and it works on one of the HP machines at work but not on my IBM thinkpad A31 or another thinkpad that I have access to but I can't remember what model. Mine is running XP and the other is running windows 98.

I plug it in and it says:
Found New Hardware
USB IO Controller

then I go through the setup selecting Universal Serial Bus Controller and then have disk and choose the inf file and I get this error:
The specified location does not contain information about your hardware.

Anyone have any ideas? On the Dell machine at work it woked flawlessly.

I've recently heard from one other person who tried a USB cable on 2 different IBM thinkpads and experienced the same problems. It is still unclear what is causing the problem.

Yeah, that was me... I was just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem.

Did you download the driver, put the .sys file in the WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/DRIVERS directory and the .inf file in the WINDOWS/INF directory?

BTW, I couldn't find the driver archive itself (I'm not sure if this is re-distributable, though) or a link to that in the Yahoo! JP1 group. Is it somewhere less obvious, or am I just missing something?

Before you attempt to install the driver, make sure the .INF and .SYS files are together in the same folder. When asked for the driver, be sure to navigate to that folder.

Take a look at this driver installation doc to see if it offers any help for your problem.
