Failed attempt to JP1 my 6012w

Last weekend I put together an interface cable using the simple design instructions. I also followed the instructions on Adding an EEPROM chip to the URC-6012w: I soldered the wire across JMP2. I soldered the 6-pin header to JP1. I soldered the EEPROM (24C16N) to U2. When I tried to initialize it using the 981 reset, I got 2 short and 1 long flashes instead of 4 flashes. I repeatedly tried to re-solder without success. I ended up breaking one of the legs off the chip so I tossed it out. It may have been bad to begin with because I actually pulled it from an old cordless phone that no longer worked.

I plan on ordering a new EEPROM. My questions is, can I somehow test that my interface cable is working before I get the EEPROM installed?

Thanks,
dw

Other than testing the pinouts with a multimeter, etc, you'll need the remote before being able to fully test the interface, since IR needs to see the EEPROM.
