Help with ReplayTV remote

I hope someone can help me with this. I have a ReplayTV 5000 remote, and all I want to do is make the volume and mute keys operate my stereo receiver instead of my TV. Based one what I had read, I thought I could do this with JP1, so I bought a JP1 cable (there's no way I'd be able to build one myself!

) So I got the cable and I tried to read the documentation on JP1 but I'm totally lost in all these technical terms, like function codes and update codes and key moves and protocols, and my head is going to explode! Would someone be willing to write a simple step-by-step explanation that a pea-brain like me could understand, explaining how to change the volume and mute keys on my ReplayTV remote so that they control my receiver? I know my receiver is a Sony STR-AV300 and my ReplayTV is a model 5040. I have a JP1 cable and I can connect it between my computer and the ReplayTV remote. I also downloaded two programs, IR.exe and keymap-master.xls, but I can't figure out how to use either of them -- I don't even know if I need to use either of them. I'd appreciate any help!

I just started playing with jp1 so I'm not eloquent enough with the tools
to explain it step-by-step without being very verbose, so I'll just give a
high level description and if it isn't enough feel free to come back with
more specific questions.
1) backup the config of your current remote using ir.exe
2) use IR to load the 5k extender. This is a program that extends
the functionality of the remote.
3) follow the directions in the jp1 for beginners to define a new device
http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7
4) instead of the example, use the EFC values for your RCVR (from
devices4.xls), also, instead of RCVR, change the type to TV and add
1000 to the device code
5) paste the device code created in 4 into IR devices section
6) in IR (running 5k extender) configure AUX1 to use the device
code you created in 5
7) in IR macros section, for Replay button, change to
V_AUX, O_REPLAY, Power

While using the extender is certainly a good idea, as it converts the remote into a 12 device universal remote, if the only goal here is to make the TV controls work the receiver, then there is a much easier way to do this.
NOTE: you don't mention what you want to do with the TV-POWER button, so I'm going to assume that you want it to control the Sony's power.
Here's what you do...
1. Use the IR.exe program to download the R5k remote's current memory and save it (as a backup).
2. Add the following upgrade to the Devices tab...
Upgrade Code 0 = 00 9E (TV/0158)
CA 00 51 08 B0 00 48 C8 28 A8
End
3. Assign TV/0158 to the TV button, using the General tab in IR.exe
4. Reload to the remote.
That's it!
Now, if you want the TV-POWER button to power on the TV but still have the TV volume buttons work the receiver, this would require using the Device Combiner, and to do that I would need to know what setup code you are using to control your TV. If you haven't found a setup code for it, I would need to know the brand and model.

Thanks, Rob, that worked great! How did you come up with those Upgrade Code numbers?
As you said, now the power button controls the receiver rather than the TV. This is fine for now. Ideally, I'd want the power button to control BOTH the TV and the receiver. I think I need a macro to do that. Is that very easy to do? I was using Setup Code 0053 for my (JVC) TV.

Rob can probably do it in his sleep with one arm tied behind his back.
For mortals like you and me:
1) open up keymap-master-v7.56.xls
2) open up Devices4.xls
3) in D4 search for Audio/0158, these are the values you'll be entering
into KM (except you'll be defining a TV instead of RCVR because the 5k
remote only understands TV and VCR)
4) in KM, copy from D4 RCVR/0158
a) change remote to Replay 5000
b) change device type to TV
c) change setup code to 0158
d) leave buttons as EFC
e) change protocol to Sony 12/15
f) change device1 to 16
g) change device2 to 13
5) in KM change to function tab, copy from D4 RCVR/0158 EFCs
a) vol up - 080
b) vol down - 076
c) mute - 083
d) power - 079
6) in KM go back to setup tab
7) you'll see the upgrade code in the middle section

OK, here's an upgrade that uses the Device Combiner so that the POWER button works the TV and the volume buttons work the Sony.
NOTE: You will need to copy BOTH the device upgrade and the protocol, then set the TV button to use code TV/2000
Upgrade Code 0 = 0F D0 (TV/2000)
44 00 51 00 00 01 48 01 C8 01 28 00 17
End
Upgrade Protocol 0 = 01 44 (S3C8+)
00 00 22 08 06 96 10 04 90 05 6B 03 E4 05 0D 38
04 2C FF E7 62 45 E7 32 44 E3 42 E3 52 1C 03 E3
72 D7 17 1E A2 36 3B F7 97 01 FF 06 D9 02 56 67
BF C6 CA 00 10 C6 C2 09 9A 70 C3 70 C2 C6 DA 15
E7 1F 15 82 47 4A 4F 00 34 3F 00 CA 08 B0 00
End

Holy Carp,
This is the exact question that's been plaguing me for two days. Now I just need to get the cable and figure out my repsective codes.
This is a great forum.
Just to further my query and satiate my curiosity, does anyone know of any other remotes on the market that have actual PVR capability besides the 9960 and 9962?

The URC-6131 has PVR support, but is not JP1-able unless modified. Fortunately Rob sells modified ones, as do
www.surfremotecontrol.com and
www.bluedo.com

Add another user who was looking for this very answer.
Last weekend, my wife picked up and started using my old Replay5K remote, which I left out in the upstairs bedroom. She quickly decided it fit her hand much better than the 2117 I have spent my entire adult lifetime programming for us.
Of course, it (the 2117) does lots of nifty things that my wife, incomprehensibly, find easier to simply get up and adjust by PHYSICALLY CHANGING THE A/V CONTROLS! (I know.. I know...).
Anyway, all I really need is to get the darn VOL + and VOL - to work for my Technics receiver. I browsed a little this weekend, and downloaded the extender, which was when I realized there must be an easier way.
Now I know there is!

You might look at the
Rob's modified 6011's. They are modified to be an 8811 minus a physical device button or two and w/o learning but are much smaller. I have the R5K remote with an extender and the main limitation is lack of physical buttons.
And, Rob, you'll be sending some of those big $$ my way, right?

When I first got the 15-2117 I thought this remote is way bulky. I had
grown used to the ShowStopper remote. After a few weeks of usage,
the remote fit just right. I'd say give it some time, and hide the other
remotes for a week or two.
If 5k remote is a must, IMO you really do want to use the extender
because it supports keymoves, macros, and more devices.
If you don't want to use the extender, I think the 5k remote just uses
whatever device is defined as TV to figure out what to do with power,
vol+/-, and mute.
Basically take the Technics receiver device upgrade you have from the
2117, load it up in KM, change the remote to Replay 5000, change the
device type to TV, and load into IR.
That should get you vol+/-/mute/power for the technics receiver.
If you want to control TV power, Audio vol+/-/mute, and Replay, you
are probably better off with the extender, but you can probably also
use the device combiner protocol to create a single device upgrade
mixing audio vol+/-/mute with tv power.

I hid the other remotes for nearly two years!!! I have never found the 2117 bulky, but then again, I've got a set of gorilla mits on me compared to my wife's dainty paws (OT: small hands require smaller diamonds, so if you have to chose to marrry between two otherwise identical women, pick the one with the small hands!).
Another reason to only use the two 2117s I have is that we very often controlling the AV system from either the deck or the kitchen with limited sight lines; it's great never having to worry about pointing the remote (which my wife still does anyway). (OT: downside of an RF remote is that you can't mash the thing down between the cushions on the sofa, lest you transmit all sorts of stray commands).
So I'll give this a shot this weekend. I don't really think my wife cares about the power control... she refuses to use the macros I setup or to manually switch to three different devices and nearly always walks up to the AV cabinet to power up or down.
Thanks again!

I can't get the device upgrade (RCVR 1308) to work this way for me.
I don't necessarily care if the power (TV 0000) is still controlled via the Replay remote...
The device upgrade I pasted from KM tells me VOL +/- and MUTE are not defined. When I load it up and define my TV as 1308, I don't get any thing to happen when I hit volume.
Any thoughts????
Here's the device upgrad:
Upgrade Code 0 = B5 1C (Amp/1308) keymap-master Device Upgrade (KM v8.24)
5A 00 01 00 FF FF
End

That upgrade doesn't come close to being useable for Amp/1308 (or anything else for that matter). There's no buttons defined at all, and it's using the NEC1 protocol (5A) while I think Amp/1308 is Panasonic Combo.
It looks to me like you just loaded KM, selected the remote, device type, and setup code, but nothing else (no protocol and device number(s), no functions defined, no buttons assigned, etc).
