I need help with the learning procedure

hi rob...i read your tutorial, and i practically read the same thing from others...im at #6 -"how do you create a device from scratch", and here's now my problem:

my 15-2116 will not learn any codes whatsoever from my yamaha cinemastation remote...i only get "error" on my lcd on every buttton. in your tutorial you used some vcr code for an example, and unfortunately i wasnt so lucky to get manufacturer code to be able to as mucha s power the thing on/off...any suggestions? maybe im reading/understanding this all wrong! thanks for your patience

OK, let's try and determine if the problem is remote related or user related.

Are you able to successfully learn from any of your other remotes? If not, then there's either something wrong with your 15-2116, or more likely you're not performing the learning process correctly.

1) First, line up the remotes head to head, a few inches apart.
2) Follow the onscreen prompts until the screen reads something like "IR LEARN"
3) Press a device button (eg, TV, VCR, etc)
4) Press the button on the 15-2116 that you wish to teach
5) Wait a second, then press and hold the appropiate button on the OEM (ie, Yamaha) remote. KEEP PRESSING the button until the 15-2116's LCD screen reads "SUCCESS".
6) If you wish to learn more buttons, skip back to step 4.

If you can learn from your other OEM remotes, but not from the Yamaha remote, are you sure the Yamaha remote is an IR remote (as opposed to an RF remote). Does the remote either have a see thru window at the top of the remote, or does it have a small IR-LED sticking through the end? If the casing is completely solid, it's probably an RF remote. If you are able to successfully use the Yamaha remote from another room, it's definitely an RF remote.
