Should you use the learning fuction to learn the codes of a unit you can't find information on (RCA DVR40, TIVO) before you download your remote info to IR?

I have the RS 15-2117 and an RCA DVR40 TIVO reciever with the peanut remote and I'm note sure if I should use the learning function of my 2117 to learn the keys from the peanut remote. None of the program codes in the 2117 manual work for the TIVO unit so I was unsure if I needed to do this first.

Thanks for the help.

You need to learn a few commands in order to verify what they are. IR can decode most commands. Then you can look in the device upgrades and find one that uses that same Protocol and device. Take a look at this as it explains the mechanics.

Once you try the upgrade, then you can learn any commands that are missing and add to the upgrade.

Are you sure that VCR/0618 and SAT/1142 don't work?

I tried SAT/1142 and that didn't work but I may be doing it wrong. The manual doesn't even list the RCA DVR. I have an RCA RCU810 and it's not in that manual either.

When you say to try the VCR/0618 should I use that code when stting the SAT button? I have my VCR button already programmed.

All non-Sony TiVos use the same IR codes, so don't worry about the RCA not being in the manual

SAT/1142 should work, assuming you haven't changed the unit code of your TiVo.

In order to program your SAT button to use the VCR/0618 code, you must first reassign the SAT button as a VCR button. Instructions for doing that are on page 19 of the manual.

Now that we know you have the RCA 810, first there is no SAT code 1142(1159) in the rca. And the setup codes are off by 17 in the 810, so the tivo code in the RCA is VCR0635.

I now see that you wrote you had the 2117 in your post, which does have setup codes SAT1142 & VCR0618, and will work the RCA DSR40.
