I'm about to push the envelope on the dumb questions idea...

Actually a statement and a series of questions. Came across this forum searching for a solution to rid myself of a breadbasket full of remotes. Plugged my RCU810B into the yahoo search and here i am...and I discover there is some sort of secret PC interface in this thing. This is my last gasp before plunking down several benjamins to buy one of those jazzy control the world hi-end remotes. Plunking down 40.00 for a cabel seems smarter...but ONLY if (the question part!):
1. Is this manageable for a non-tekkie? I can hardly work my cellphone.
2. I just bought a LITEON LVW501 DVD Recorder. At the end of my journey will I be able to pitch this remote out along with the 8 others I have here?
3. I also have a PS2 Game Console for which I bought (gasp) another "universal" remote. Will I be able to turn my PS2 off and on without the long trek across my room?
4. Add my Phillips CD Recorder to the list of remotes I'm dying to send
to remote control heaven.
I'm going to venture out now and see what I can learn from the posts here. Thanks for any answers!

I just started 5 days ago on this and the results I achieved so far are just great. I have been working on it almost every day an hour or two and still have a long way to go if I want to make the remote to work exactly the way I want it to. You will need a very steep learning curve to start but then it all becomes clear.
As for my background, I am no computer scientist or so but I am a bit tech crazy.....
Amazing

That depends on the individual. But "those jazzy control the world hi-end remotes" you mentioned aren't necessarily any easier. I think people are just more willing to give up after they've paid JP1 prices than after they've paid the higher prices and that (rather than a difference in difficulty) causes the difference in fraction on non tekkies who decide it's too hard.

It's almost certain that your JP1 remote will be able to totally replace the Liteon remote.

I doubt it. Most game systems have a physical switch for on/off and there is no IR signal which can turn them on/off. If there is an IR signal that does the job then a JP1 remote is the best bet for generating it.
There are X10 (and I think other) remote switchable AC power connections that can be IR controlled. If you really want to turn on/off a device that has an old style physical power switch, that's a good choice.

they're only $14, not 40

Wayside,
I'm new to this too, and I do find it a little difficult. I think one of the biggest things is whether you have the time to put in to learn the concepts. Like amazing said, he has put in many hours and still has some way to go. If this stuff is interesting to you, it will be a fun little assignment, otherwise you can just look at it as time necessary to invest in order to rid you of all of those remotes.
The most important thing though is that there are many great people here willing to help you out!
